Roku TV stuck on "Welcome to Emby"

Recommended Posts

My Roku TV is stuck at "Welcome to Emby", regardless of which user I choose from the profile list.  this is happening with both the Beta 3.0.85 channel and with the 3.0.84 one as well.  Other instances in the house seem to be fine, Android TV, browser, and iOS.  The android TV (Shield TV) and Roku are both wired into the network Emby is running on.  Emby server is 3.4.1.0.  I've attached the latest day's log file from the server.  Let me know if I'm just missing something simple.  I should have mentioned.  Went on vacation for a week.  When I left, all was well.  This just started happening sometime in that period.

Thanks,

James

The two login attempts I see in that server log are for the same user "James".  Are you sure it is a problem no matter what user is chosen?

When it gets "stuck" is the wheel spinning or frozen or not visible at all?

I'm 90% sure it is spinning, but I will post in an hour or so when I get home.

And I am sure I tried different users. I'll upload another set of files tonight after I check with at least 3 profiles if that is helpful. I can even Include a screenshot if you'd like.

Wheel is spinning.  tried again today with "Katelyn" "Alex" and "James" profiles.  attaching new log.  Also attaching picture of login.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

In case it is relevant, my Hitachi Roku TV says it system updated on 6/16 to version 8.1.0 Build 4123.  Hopefully this isn't a problem on it's way to other platforms of Roku.

Is your Emby server properly setup for external access?  If so, would you be willing to create a local user (not invite with email) for me and then PM me the server address and user credentials.  Then I could try and reproduce the issue from here (you might want to confirm the problem happens with this new user first).

Thanks.

I'll send you that PM in a moment.  On the Roku version part of things... There is a 8.0 version in the house as well.  Connected the same way, it has no problems.

I just signed in as both ebr and Alex with no problems.

My Roku is running 8.1.0 4131-29.

Can you try forcing a system update to see if maybe you get a newer version?

Not unusual for Roku to ship out a brick every now and then...

Roku used to let you use the special screen (On the roku homescreen press home, home, home, home, home, FF, FF, FF, RW, RW on your remote). On that screen is "Cycle Software Update Server" and there was a way to switch this from release, to stable, or back to release. On my roku ultra I can click cycle software update server and it never changes from release. This was a way to deprecate your roku so that any issues still leaving wrinkles roku could iron out. If anyone can test on their roku, does the update cycle work, and using update software actually rollback or does it always update to the same version you are? curious....

EDIT: Also notice you can't change the channel store server to other regions anymore either. This might be to avoid piracy as fimrware updates block exploits and deprecation unblocks them, and channel store changes allow region blocks to break.

there isn't a newer version, but using the trick speechles mentioned above, I was able to get to the prompt to "upgrade" from 8.1.0.4123 to 8.0.0.4183.  Maybe they pulled the release due to issues.  I don't see it actually changing update servers when I click the button.  Wish me luck as I downgrade.  I'll come back and let you know if I fixed my issue or bricked my TV.

Update:

No problems after moving back.  And when I go in to update, it says I'm on the latest version (at 8.0.0 Build 4183).  I guess they pulled the other one.

Thanks for bearing with me guys.  Sounds like there is a firmware version that isn't working right with Emby.  All my other apps were fine, but I really only hit a half dozen or so: Amazon Prime, Netflix, Spectrum app, etc.

Anyway, I really appreciate it everyone.

Actually, roku keeps an internal list of your serial number of your roku when you update. When you use that special screen and downgrade it tells roku not to update that serial number to that version ever again, effectively you opt-out of that firmware version on that device. This is why I can't roll back my roku now, since I used downgrade last time, I can't downgrade again after updating, since the release before this is the update I opted-out-of last time via downgrade. *sad panda face* You can't go back two versions from latest version, only 1 via the downgrade. Just keep that in mind.

Just was recommended this app due to the M3U player being banned.  My screen is stuck on the Roku as well, not moving at all.  So we're just waiting on Roku at this point, is that correct?  Thanks.

Is your Roku on the same firmware that zape was?  If so, can you try what they did?

I'm stuck on 8.0.0 Build 4184.  No option to roll it back or change it.  The update option says the same version, 4184.

You, more than likely, are experiencing a different issue.

Please try uninstalling and re-installing the channel and, if that doesn't work, please describe exactly what you are doing and what is happening (in a new post please as I'm sure this is different).

Thanks.

I am having the exact same issue with the "Welcome to Emby" with Roku firmware 8.1.0 Build 4137-29.  I tried the technique of rolling back the firmware but cannot get the option for an older firmware.   I only get the option to upgrade the Roku to the exact same firmware (8.1.0 Build 4197-29). I assume we have to wait for Roku to fix this?

I am using the latest stable release Emby server and Roku channel.

I have also noticed this does not occur when the device is connected over Ethernet, only on WIFI.

I too am having this problem. I started with the Beta version of Emby for Roku and then completely uninstalled the app from my Roku and installed the latest non-beta version. I was successful in the re-install of the Roku firmware but it only lasted for one or two launches of the application.

I have the latest version of Emby Server, the Emby Client for Roku and the Roku 3 firmware. When I open the application, it successfully connects to my server and displays a list of users. When a user is selected, it hangs on the Welcome to Emby screen. The problem occurs on all of my Roku devices which includes another Roku 3, and a Roku Stick. Connection type, WiFi or Ethernet does not seem to impact the result either way.

UPDATE:

So I installed the "Emby Blue Neon" version mentioned on https://emby.media/community/index.php?/topic/60103-emby-not-loading-on-roku/ and suddenly the normal version started working again. Perhaps there is a problem with some sort of download that occurs when the user logs in? I have noticed similar hang-ups on setting up a new Roku, however closing the application and re-opening it always did the trick. Which was not the case this time as the user has logged into this Roku hundreds of times.

UPDATE:

The latest version stopped working again however Blue Neon Night is still working.

I have the exact same problem on both of my Roku Premiere+. I am not able to downgrade to a previous version of the firmware, only "upgrade" to the same version that is already installed. My current setup is useless now... :-/

I know it isn't your fault but do we have an idea why it doesn't work anymore? Do we have to correct something in Emby app to make it compatible with a change to the SDK?

Never run into problem since I got my Roku 6 month ago. Is this the kind of problem that happen frequently? Do we have a way to notify Roku that the last firmware update cause an issue? Do they release fix quickly?

Thanks!

Hi.  Since we cannot reproduce the problem and it is device/firmware-specific instead of related to the server, we don't know what the problem is.  It is possible that we could change something to work around it but we just don't know what to change.

I understand this doesn't help you and we apologize for that but just aren't sure what to do except hope that Roku fixes the issue quickly.  I have asked them about it but, I'm afraid that we won't get much of a response without being able to tell them exactly what the problem is.

Is there something we could provide to help you pinpoint the source of the problem? Logs? Network trace?

BTW, thanks for your support and great piece of software! :-)

If you know how to use a telnet application and can capture the output from your device when it hangs, that may tell us.  See here.

Thanks.

I'm currently connected to the debug server using putty on port 8085 but I don't know how to use the debugger. What should I do?
