Am just wondering, there's an m3u channel, at least one but particularly this one, that plays 1920x1080 direct play in Chrome, but transcodes and says its 480x270 on the Fire TV with 1.5.65a. Sent a log (and attached an ffmpeg-trancsode) from the FTV at 8.55am NZ time under name of Family. Not sure if there would be a good reason for this...

I think the Fire is reporting it correctly.

"Height":270,"Width":480,

What do your eyes tell you?

I need to look some more. Mostly it looks way better than that, especially for say a breakfast program that has very clear news headlines / text at the bottom, mostly the picture looks good but then they add some clips that are lower res. Still, don't the its 480x270. Am mostly wondering about the difference with Chrome on a PC, which is obviously a different device, but then again, FTV can play BR fine, but then again, its an internet feed, not BR.

Everything is on ethernet and internet is 100Mpbs down btw.

It's an adaptive bitrate video so if you look at the contents of the url you see there are multiple qualities available.

which one gets chosen is going to be up to whoever processes that url, whether it's ffmpeg on the server, or a video player if it direct plays, etc.

Playing that channel in Chrome it starts off as 480x270 but goes up to 1920x1080 after maybe 5 seconds. Shouldn't the FTV do the same ?

Depends. If we're feeding the url into ffmpeg it might not be doing that kind of switching. But when the url gets fed directly into the browser, it knows how to do that sort of thing.
