Future of streaming music from EMBY

Hi,

some time ago I had asked whether there was a solution to stream music across my house i.e. the same song to several wifi speakers like SONOS, etc.

I've just come across the HiFiBerry project which is open source and promising. I believe it uses Airplay. Is this a possible solution that will allow EMBY to one day stream music across my home? I'm loving EMBY as the days go by and the features get richer and the product matures. It would be great to have this eventually implemented. Streaming music across my home is my ultimate goal.

I am a Sonos user and want to add Emby as a DLNA or direct music service. Are there any plans on the streaming capabilities of Emby to make this happen?

Hi, what are you asking for specifically? Emby already supports Dlna.

I can confirm that my individual Sonos speakers do show up in the DLNA list, but not my groups. This means I can (and have) streamed music to my playbar, but not to "My Living Room" so my sub and rear speakers work.

Plex has a music service app that allows the Sonos app to treat it like any other online music service. Unfortunately, it is the only local option. Since I don't use Plex and don't want to upload my library to the cloud, I would love to have an Emby option as well.

yes, the music services are like plugins for the sonos app/speaker.  However, for the Plex version to work (the last time I used it) the server must be able to have remote access.  Plex made it clear that LAN connections could not work with the Sonos app (I'm not sure why).  I only have one speaker (which I mainly control through emby for my local music) and DLNA has worked fine but if I were to get a second (for stereo) I would imagine that I'd have to use the Sonos app for stereo to work.

Thanks for the info. It's probably like Alexa and google home where the commands have to be sent to a Sonos server and then relayed back which is remote access would be needed.

Hi...When I use the mobile client "Emby for Android", what about the data transmitted when streaming music?Let's assume I stream a song that's stored as a mp3 file with 4MB.When I stream this song will Emby transmit 4MB data then?If yes, how can this be reduced? With Spotify (depending on the settings) the data usage is certainly not 4MB / song.

Hi there, have you explored the options in the app? You can specify your music internet streaming quality.

I don't believe that's the case - I believe the Sonos app (and the players) are SMAPI clients, capable of directly querying (local) servers that implement SMAPI. https://developer.sonos.com/build/content-service-get-started/architecture/

Certainly I have been able to set up Subsonic without any account, remote access or port forwarding, and based on their instructions at http://www.subsonic.org/pages/sonos.jsp (see 'Using a remote subsonic server') you can set up a custom service descriptor on a Sonos player to talk directly to your SMAPI server.

As a premiere customer it would be amazing to see Emby implement SMAPI support and get registered with Sonos, so that we could use the Sonos app to directly play back audio from an Emby library. Given you already have a well developed API I imagine this would be a relatively easy extension. You will likely pick up customers currently paying for Subsonic purely for this feature, and I think it might also satisfy a number of users who have asked for a 'simpler' music playback app.

What do you think?

I would love for Emby to have proper Sonos support. It was a bit disappointing to see Plex in the list of available music services, but not Emby...

For me it would mean I could disable my Airsonic server, as this is basically the only reason why I keep it running. Adding the support would make me a happy customer! :-)

@Luke: is this something we can expect anytime soon (H1/H2 2021)?
