The iOS 1.5 beta features an all-new video player. It will be able to direct play considerably more formats now. DTS audio and TrueHD audio will still require server transcoding.

This is very exciting so please try it out ! There is however one drawback to this. The custom video player will support a lot more formats, but it also means we will lose some native iOS features. The picture in picture feature is lost because of this and there's no way to restore that unless we go back to the native apple player. We will probably discover other things along the same lines.

Changelog

  • A new video player that will direct play more formats
  • Improved image loading performance in iOS 11
  • All secondary list screens now have play all & shuffle buttons
  • Support wake on lan from server selection screen

That’s really great news.
Is the non direct play capability of DTS an issue you‘re sure you won’t be able to add or will it probably be added in the future?
Will the new player be released for TVOS, too?

Whatever we do, we will be bringing to TVOS as well. iOS will come first.

Hey Luke, I wanna thank you very very very very much!!! An to be honest, it’s exciting me a lot! I guess this beta will be available soon for people already involved in Apple beta system right? Or I miss something and you can explain again to install it and test it?

Few issues it is not deinterlacing and it is very slow to tune live tv i think it is the same issue i have everyone it defaults to 7 seconds probe and can that be changed to 2 seconds on my pi and win works perfectly with 1.5 seconds.

It is very fast starting recordings.

Finally, direct playing for lots of content I have, so thank you Luke :)

Findings so far:

Content: strm with embedded subs pre-selected before play:

While Emby Theater 2.9.7 direct plays embedded subs perfectly, beta 1.5.0 seems to want to transcode embedded subs because I see ffmpeg being started, while server dashboard keeps saying content is direct playing, while on iPad the screen stays black and timer remains on 0:00

Content: strm with external srt subs pre-selected before play:

While Emby Theater 2.9.7 won't play external srt subs, beta 1.5.0 direct plays external srt subs perfectly also won't play external srt subs.

Both test done with same movie which contains embedded and external srt subs.

So it seems that 2.9.7 and 1.5.0 have exactly opposite behaviour concerning subtitle handling, while video player core is same family.

Edit: see blue (in test with beta server 3.3.1.7)

Thanks for the feedback. We haven't looked at subtitles or audio tracks yet, we'll get to that soon.

Any chance you can look at iPhone X issues because once you start a video you can’t go back you have to force close. It’s awesome that mpeg2 videos start immediately.

Definitely need to purchase new iPad after holidays with these improvements the old one is struggling
