Force transcoding

Hello there,

first: Sorry for my bad english ... I try my best.

I'm using the kodi addon on an android TV (Sony KD55XE9005).

The Server is situated on a synology DS216+II and should be automatically updated to the latest version (Version 3.3.1.0 by now).

I also use the android emby App on the TV.

Here´s the problem:

I´ve got a lot of files which were convertet by handbrake with the video encoder level set to "auto" and so it encodes most Blurays with level 5.0 or higher. This worked well on my XBox One X (but unfortunately there is no propper audio passthrough available on the box - not even DD 5.1. The Box do it itself and sends a MultiChannel signal to my AVR and my AVR can't do its job).

By trial and error I´ve now examined, that the TV isn't able to play files with a level higher than 4.2.

When I play the file with the "normal" emby App on the TV, the server tells me, that its transcoding and the file is played quite well. But only until I want to have some PGS Subs. Then it immediatly starts to stutter. Ok...the server isn't powerful enough. I got the same issue on the XBox allthough there was no transcoding necessary for the video but for burning in the subs. There I solved it by using kodi. Kodi (with the App) played all smoothely even with PGS Subs. Kodi got the video and the sound from the server and took care about the PGS itself. Worked very well.

Now I want it the same on the TV (no DTS but at least on the TV the files were played with DD 5.1 via ARC). But when I start the file via Kodi, the server tells, that it is played directly and in Kodi itself it shows that the file is played but everything stays black (its the same, when I try to access the file without the app direct via NFS - the TV isn't able to play files with higher level than 4.2).

So now I don't understand, why the server refuses to transcode the video. The client (kodi addOn) should tell the server, that it can't play the format and so the server should transcode it into a propper format. So..okay...maybe there is a failure in kodi itself because kodi starts to play, then the player does'nt appear, then I switch to the player via the menu and see that the file stucks on 00:00:01 und jumps between 00:00:02 and 00:00:001). Maybe kodi and the app doesn't realy recognize, that the file does not play (btw it's the same in Plex with these kind of files).

But how could I force the transcode in the addon.

THX in advance.

I'm not sure why it would be black, the video engine comes from Kodi so it should play.

Transcode with Emby for Kodi is different from other emby apps. Since Kodi can direct play all files there is not auto transcode in place. You have to set this up yourself. In the add-on settings > Video playback > Make sure Force HTTP playback is enabled, also, you'll want to play with the bitrate value (reduce it). You can also add a list of extensions you want the add-on to NOT transcode if need be.

Let me know if you need more help.
