You can add an option in settings to show/hide that information permanently, anyway, whatever it's best to keep it as minimalist as possible without leaving the now playing screen anymore to check on that info; videos has its own "stats for nerds", music shouldn't be left behind.

...and drop the "transcoded to..." line.
You can also add an icon indicating the song is played directly or transcoded, it could turn red when transcoding or viceversa or just show the bitrate, bit depth and frequency as my initial suggestion (128Kbps/44,1Khz/16bits).

What about a 'stats for nerds' menu similar to the video player showing the original media info (bitrate, codec, container, that sorta thing), what it's being transcoded to and the reason?

Yes, that would be cool too!, but to be interested in that information, at least we must be informed first that the song is getting transcoded, otherwise I don't see the point of taking a look to that info for a direct playback, right?.
For example, with an icon indicating a transcoding is in progress, if we tap on it, it could lead us directly to the "stats for nerd" of that song.
