Hey guys,

I am looking for suggestions on a NAS device well sort of nas but not really. Ideally i would like a hdd enclosure capable of housing 4 drives that can connect to the computer via usb3 but still have a wired ethernet option. Something that provides onboard raid support would be ideal. I am finding that my movie and tv show collection is expanding pretty quick now that i am not restrained by proprietary hardware that encrypts everything. I have down scaled a lot of the library but its still growing quickly.

I did already expand the number of drives i can house in my computer with an add on card i am just thinking that a nas might save me headaches in the future also on expansion.

I've used Buffalo NAS in the past and have qnap, asustor and Synology NAS.   The Buffalo worked but were a pain to set up since the firmware is on the hard drives and just more work than is necessary.  The Qnap and Asustor were to play with but by far I like the Synology.  Even the older ones run the latest firmware, they are easy to set up and use, and can easily upgrade the hard drives with huge ones as your storage needs increase.  .   I don't think any of them have both usb and wired connectivity at the same time.  You really don't need both if you have wired ethernet, unless you have a computer that is not on the network and only has usb.  There are usb ports on the Synology but they are for adding additional external storage to the NAS.  Hope this helps!

Why would you require USB and ethernet?  The most cost effective way would be to build your own and plug it into your LAN.  But, if you're not into that kinda thing, the above suggestions will work.

i have a 5 bay - non raid version - works very well - power efficient - works with my QNAP and Win2012r2 - "just" mount the drives(s) in your OS and share across your network
