Live / Recorded TV issue

The app doesn't seem to be able to rewind live TV, or to start watching a recorded program (from the beginning) while it's recording.

I'm currently recording a television program. It started 5 minutes ago. I see the recording in the app (separate from the watch live), but if I play it I get the live stream and can't rewind to the beginning.

Through the web interface I can start from the beginning.

Also can't rewind live TV (no instant replay) through the app.

Ok, it's direct playing the raw stream because the LG can support that natively but that means you get no ff/rew. So in order to accomplish this we're going to have to play a different way and convert on the fly with the server to a different container format that will allow seeking. Thanks.

Is there any way to work around this now, @@Luke?

Just curious if there is an ETA on this feature, or a features list where we can tell if/when it is being worked on?  (I'm new to Emby.)

We've already submitted a new update to the LG app store. There won't be any changes related to this in that update, but we can look at this after that. Thanks.

Went premiere for the DVR, but it consistently doesn't work. It records fine, but playback is a disaster.

Trying to watch the world series right now. Recording is ongoing. I can start the recording from the beginning (via LG tv app or web interface), and I can watch live, but I can't advance the recording and I can't rewind from live TV. This type of (mis)behavior is common.

Put differently, my options are to watch it live (with no rewind) or to watch the recording from the beginning (with no fast forward). That's a badly crippled DVR, at best.

Logs attached. As I say, this happens all the time. Direct play and transcode. Web interface and TV app.

Now that the game is over (and recording finished), seeking works great.

But the inability to seek during live recording is a major disappointment. I think most people would agree that live-seek functionality is a basic requirement for any DVR system.

But it's not.

It's a Dell PowerEdge T30 with an Intel Xeon E3-1225 v5 3.3G, 8M cache, 4C/4T, turbo (80W).

8 GB RAM.

Primary duty is running Emby.

I don't think I've ever seen it go above 30-40% CPU and ram usage (via top).

lol, that's actually pretty funny.  I have the exact same server (with a tad more ram, not like that would matter).  great bang for the buck.

anyway, does it behave the same way w/ other live recordings?  I ask because sometimes sporting events can be a little wonky in general.

A current recording isn't having the seek problem, but it's choppy.

I have noticed this before - my wife complains that the DVR function doesn't work, but when I test it it seems to work fine.

CPU Is spiking during playback. Load average around 3.5 - I don't remember ever seeing that before. Most of it is coming from ffmpeg.

Seems crazy to me that this isn't enough computing power for DVR. The black boxes seem to do it just fine with much less.

OK. Correction to the above post.

Playback of an ongoing recording through the web interface triggers transcoding, which is using all available CPU and performs poorly (and I think that's bullshit on this system), but it seeks properly.

Playback through the LG TV app is not transcoding, but no seek function.

Perhaps this whole problem is a continuation of the issue I reported here... way back in January.

So the DVR function just doesn't work.

I'm reviving this old post to see if there's a planned fix for this, Luke.

Watching the world series with the family - OTA antenna to a HDHomeRun to Emby to the above-discussed LG - my Premiere subscription is useless because I can't fast-forward a recording of the game and I can't rewind during a live stream. I might as well just connect the antenna directly to the TV.

And my wife wants to know why we don't have a TiVo...

I would like to add to this. I was pretty impressed with Emby until I tried to watch a football game. Like IamMrZ, it was pretty painful to try and watch an in progress sporting event. Like a lot of sports fans, I like to record for 1-2 hour before watching so that I can jump through commercials or even the first half and end up pretty close to real time at the end. It seemed like I could only jump forward in a couple minute chunks. And when you're trying to go 45 min ahead that was painful.

Now that 4.0 server is out, I REALLY hope this is on the top of the to-do list for Emby. I agree that the DVR is crippled without the ability to freely seek/jump within the existing, but unfinished, recording. I'm a long time user of SageTV and SageTV could do this from day 1 that I used it (at least 10+ years). I don't understand media containers and which allow seek and which don't. But, this is a showstopper for me.

Would using Plex plugin enable this?
