Emby not detecting new content / watch status

Hi,

When I first installed Emby, Emby Server would keep track of new content and the watch status of shows, but in the last few updates it seems to have stopped. I use Emby on my main HTPC and share media with my slave HTPC and my S7 Edge. To get the watch status to update in the Kodi and the Emby Web Interface, I have to go into the Web Interface > Library  and the click 'Scan All Libraries'. Only at this point will new content be displayed and the watch status be shown in the Web Interface / Kodi.

Any ideas on what could be causing this and how to resolve it?

Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Cheers,

Ross

hi @, have you enabled the realtime monitor for your emby libraries? This will allow the server to pickup new media in your folders in realtime without having to run a library scan.

This has nothing to do with watch status though so you'll need to provide more information on that. Thanks.

Hi @@Luke,

Thank you for that. I didn't realise there was a setting for Real Time Monitoring, so I have just activated this.

With regards to the watch status, I can watch X episodes on the HTPC downstairs, but when I go to the bedroom HTPC, it doesn't show the most recently played episode and just the most recent one watched on that HTPC. Both HTPC's run Kodi with the Emby plugin - The S7 Edge uses the Emby App from the Play Store. Both installs are using the most recent stable Kodi (17.6) and Emby is running on the most recent version.

So in this case, prior to you enabling this feature, this means the library scan was running periodically in the background often enough such that you never noticed a problem until now. The default is every 12 hours I think. So an alternative to the realtime monitor would be to go to scheduled tasks and increase the frequency.

Remember that the Emby for Kodi addon requires a syncing process and therefore there will always be some delay in order for the information to flow from server to client. @@Angelblue05 might have some tips on making this process more seamless, but alternatively you can also look at the EmbyCon add-on:

https://emby.media/community/index.php?/topic/46651-embycon-kodi-addon/

This doesn't require any syncing and is more similar to other Emby apps where you just browse and play in a very simple manner. Please let us know if this helps. Thanks !

Ah that would explain it then as we've only just started using it daily, where it was an every other day thing before. Thanks again for your help.

I'll have a look at the settings again for Emby for Kodi to see if I have missed something or accidentally disabled something. Thank you very much for all your help, it is very much appreciated.

Can you give me a bit more details? I'm not sure I fully grasp what you are saying. Updates are near instant because they are triggered by the websocket. If the server triggers an update, all devices running Emby for Kodi will receive and process it. However, maybe with a specific example, I'll be able to help. Are both machine always running? Can you confirm if you did duplicate your setup (copy the kodi userdata), that you generated a new device id on the second device? Otherwise, that could definitely mess with websocket messaging if two devices running at the same time have the same id.

Thank you for the swift response.

Main HTPC - Windows 10 running Emby Server + Kodi v17.6 (on 24-7)

Bedroom HTPC- Windows 10 running Kodi v17.6 (switched on and off as used)

Say for instance I started watching season one of a TV show on the main HTPC and got to s01e05 and then decided to go upstairs to continue watching it, I would stop it and head up stairs. When I switch on the bedroom HTPC it shows that Emby is syncing, but it will show the show as unmatched, so i have to mark the episodes I have watched as watched and start watching from s01e06. If I watched a couple of episodes and got to s01e8 and in the morning went back to the main HTPC, it will show that the next episode to watch is s01e6. The computers can see each over, as the videos are stored on the main HTPC.

Both were fresh installs from no backups. All plugins in Kodi were manually installed and configured to prevent any conflicts.

Thank you for the additional information.

Well you'll need to provide your kodi log of the second device to see what it's doing if the following does not work.

What happens if you have both device running, and you mark something as watched, manually, in the webclient? Do both HTPC update with the watched status?

Can you confirm they are setup using the same Emby user account?

Due to work commitments I may not be able to get the logs for a few days, but as soon as I can I will.

I'll try the marking the episode in the web client and see what happens.

Yes they both use the same user account.

As soon as I have the additional information for you, I'll post back.

Thank you very much for your continued help on this. I really do appreciate it.

Well since I activated the realtime syncing, the watched status seems to be working. I have so far marked a different film on each device and each watch marker has synced to each device.

Is there any way to donate to the Emby project? The supports been second to none and I'd like to give back if possible.

Excellent, thank you. I didn't realise how much Emby could do, so I'll be picking up a licence on payday.

It seems the sync issue came back yesterday and I'll grab some logs, but I have noticed a trend:

*Watch something on the front room HTPC > Watch status syncs to Emby > Watch status syncs to the bedroom HTPC.

*Watch something on Emby > Watch status syncs to bedroom > Watch status syncs doesn't sync to front room HTPC.

*Watch something on the bedroom HTPC > Watch status syncs to Emby > Watch status doesn't sync to front room HTPC.

I have tried manually syncing the front room HTPC (which hosts Emby server) through Kodi and this doesn't update the watch statuses. I tried a fresh install with just Kodi and Emby for Kodi installed and the same happens. I'll get the logs together, but does any of the described highlight what the issue could be?

Are all those kodi instances actively running while this is happening, or no?

No, the bedroom HTPC is off until we head to bed, but the front room HTPC is on 24-7. The bedroom HTPC is updating Emby as soon as a show has been watched (Emby on my phone shows the correct watch status), it just doesn't seem to get through to the front room HTPC. The bizarre thing is the front room HTPC is pushing out info about what has been watched on it and that's updating, it just doesn't seem to be obtaining the info from Emby as to what has been watched on other devices.

Again, can you repeat my earlier test? While both Kodi are running, update the watch status in the webclient, does it pick it up on both devices?

Thanks for the switch response:

-Update on Emby app - shows watched on Bedroom HTPC - unwatched on Front room HTPC.

-Update on Bedroom HTPC - shows watched on Emby- shows unmatched on Front room HTPC.

-Update watch status on Front room HTPC- watch status shows on Emby - Watch status shows on Bedroom HTPC.

It seems that the front room HTPC can send out info on what is watched on it, but if a TV show is watched on other devices, the watched status is not being pulled through to the front room HTPC, which is bizarre as Emby Server is installed on it.

Ok, can you provide the kodi log for the front room htpc? So we can see why it's not updating, something is definitely not right.

I've set it up to log, but I'm just heading out to work, so I'll have to upload it after work. Thanks so much for all your help, it is appreciated.

I mucked up and missed the word Kodi and uploaded the Emby log. Apologies. Will have a look at it again tonight, as I'm currently running a local database repair as it has started syncing one show again, but none of the other watch statuses are syncing through, which is bizarre.
