Oppo UDP-203 Profile

Hi all,

I started developing my profile based off from the work done in this thread on the 103D. So, thanks to DingDong and Luke for getting me this far!  :D

I've been tweaking and working on this as needed over the past month and have what I believe is a fairly decent working profile for the 203. Please look it over and let me know what I might be missing for maximum compatibility.

As Oppo owners likey know, the 203 should support and direct play just about every possible file type you can think of. For my purposes, all I really care about are 1:1 rips of commercial DVD/HD-DVD/Bluray/UHD. I tend to rip only the main title, lossless/core tracks, and any applicable subtitles. My goal is to be able to use the emby phone/ipad/web app to browse and select my movie and then have it Playto the Oppo via DLNA. I am still testing, but it seems as though I've managed that much at least. I was having the occasional issue of it wanting to transcode some titles, but the most recent Oppo firmware seems to have taken care of that.

So far I have successfully tested DVD's, Bluray's (h264, 3D MVC, TrueHD, DTSMA), and several UHD rips (which all played back flawlessly with full audio and HDR... No rippable Dolby Vision titles to try out yet).

I have not tested the Audio Streaming yet, but I imagine all of the typical FLAC, ALAC, Mp3, etc... file types should play fine.

So far this has blown my HTPC out of the water in terms of playback quality and ease of use. The slight loss of convenience you get from having to browse the library from a separate device is completely outweighed from the set it and forget it factor you gain. Can a madvr htpc give better results? Maybe, but at 3-4 times the price and the constant headache of tweaking settings, using external players, etc... that can all be broken by a server or Theater update at any given point. Once configured, DLNA is pretty bulletproof and the Oppo is much simpler to navigate when it comes to setting it up. (no mouse/keyboard needed). Once set, it's as simple as using your ipad to browse your collection. Once the file is playing, subtitles, audio tracks, etc... are all available via your remote, just as if you were playing an actual physical disc.

I invite anyone else with an Oppo UDP-203 to give this profile a try and share your results, comments, or suggestions.

To use, save the attached file below to your emby server  "config\DLNA\User\"  directory and then restart emby server. The profile should then be viewable/editable under the custom profiles in your Server's DLNA settings/profiles page.

If you run into any playback problems, please share as many details on the file you had problems running. (type of file, codecs, bitrates, etc...) Anything that might help sort out the issue.

Thanks for checking this out and I hope it helps other Oppo Owners out!   :)

Update: 12/12/2017

I discovered that Emby wasn't passing Multichannel PCM all that well. It either forces a transcode or goes to direct streaming mode. I added the PCM_S16LE and PCM_S24LE Audio Codecs to the MKV and TS containers and they now work perfect.

I've further experimented with HD-DVD and I think the best option would be to just upgrade to UHD as my 20 or so titles eventually become available. lol  In the meantime I'll keep investigating whats going on for a solution. The problem is that most of them playback with audio/video stuttering. They are direct playing, but there is a hiccup somewhere in the chain and I'm not sure if it is on the Oppo or Emby end of things. I haven't tried playing the HD-DVD mkv's via a usb stick or by browsing using the network yet. If that works, then I'll be looking for some help getting the profile tweaked to fix the problem.

Update: 12/25/2017

Still no luck with HD-DVD rips. I tried playing them over the network direct from the Oppo network browser and they had the same issues. It must be something in how the oppo is interpreting them (probably because they are using the same codecs as bluray, but are all 30fps.) I'll try to get a hold of Oppo Support and see if they can shed some light on this.

The only other issue I've ran into so far is getting forced subtitles to show automatically. Again, this is likely an Oppo issue, but still a bit of a pain. One solution would probably be to go through all my movies and just burn them into the video track, but getting the Oppo to just recognize the forced flag would be a lot easier. I'll throw that at Oppo support asw well and see what they say. :-)

Thanks for the work on this. My Oppo should be here this week and I'll have time next week to experiment. I will for sure give this a try.

Thanks for putting this together!  Generally it seems to work well (this is my first foray into emby/dlna so I don't have anything to compare it to).

The only issue I see is that I am unable to skip chapters on the blurays I have ripped to MKV files with makemkv.

If I take the exact same file on a usb drive and plug that into the oppo 203, they work properly and chapter skip functions.  If streaming via Emby I am unable to chapter skip...

Any thoughts on that?

Thanks!

You might not really need this profile. The default dlna profile is designed to direct play everything. You only really need to design a profile if something needs transcoding.

Interesting. OP did you run into issues prior to creating the profile? I’ll try to make time to test without it tonight.

Thanks!

Well I guess it depends on how the Oppo is detected without using a profile. Ideally you'd want it to end up with the default profile, but if it's being picked up by one of the other device profiles, then that could be why an oppo-specific profile would help.

I just downloaded this to give it a try and I can't seem to get UHD blu-ray folder playback to work. To be honest it's unclear to me that the server is actually using the profile you provided as it played back mkv files fine before this. Is there a way to verify the profile is being used?

Any development on this for UHD BluRay BDMV folder playback? All on mine playback as .ts files with stutter and playback in SDR. No matter what profile I set it to, the oppo 203 is treated as a generic device and the max bitrate exceeds the set one, resulting in transcode.

We don't have an oppo profile, so i would think that with the default profile it should just direct play.

Sadly no, everything one of my iso and bdmv folders transcode.
Transcode reason : exceededcontainerbitrate.

Each film when looking in the directory is xxxx.ts, indicating a transcode.

this behaviour does not happen with my mkv files.

Those are going to transcode anyway simply because that is the extent of our iso/bdmv folder support. There's nothing you can do with dlna profiles to prevent that. But if you had a single movie as a .ts file, that should be able to direct play.

Thank you for the clarification. For now I suppose I’ll stick to nfs mounting on my library.
I hope to soon try xnoppo through emby. Has there been any development of the emby app for Panasonic GZ OLED ?

hello guys. in case you are interested there is a tool i helped to test that uses emby as an interface and the oppo 203/205/M9702 as a reproductor. you choose a movie in you library and this tool switches the hdmi input to the oppo and starts the movie. menus and all. still on development, but really incredible. more info here:

Hi guys,

And thanks to OP for this profile, I just stumbled upon it!

I'm having issues by the Emby app not recognising my Oppo as a DLNA device. I can browse the items through my Oppo, so it is connected to the server, I just cannot start a movie from the app, since it doesn't show the Oppo in the list. Any idea why?

Thanks!

Hi, are you sure your Oppo support this? Have you tried restarting the Oppo while emby server is running?

For the people with jailbroken OPPOs that can play ISOs is it possible to get ISOs to just show up under DLNA?

I got ISOs to be indexed by Emby.

I got the OPPO to show up as a DLNA player.

But when browsing from the OPPO a test library I created with a single ISO it won't show up.

and when sending the command to play it results in black screen.

Without this profile it shows as Direct Stream and with the profile it shows as transcoding.

With the profile it flashes a black screen and stops.

Without the profile it will stay as a black screen.

I know there are python scripts to route Emby to SMB for this purpose, called xnoppo

https://github.com/siberian-git/Xnoppo

But that just overly complicate what could be achieve with DLNA.

Maybe writting something like:

http-get:*:video/ISO:*,http-get:*:video/iso:* ?

I'm experimenting with this without success, I have little to no knowledge about DLNA protocol.

By the way, for the user having problems for the OPPO to show up, change the docker container from Bridge to Host, this solves the issue.
