4K content from Chrome and IOS Emby app show as 1080p on a Vizio TV M70-E3

I've been doing further testing. The only time there are playback problems is if I leave the allow transcode video option, enabled. The smartcast app can play HEVC 4K HDR, perfectly. But emby seems to think it can't and tries transcoding, which it does, poorly. Jerky playback and terrible color (not being able to handle the HDR). Also, the smartcast app can handle 5.1 DD. I was also testing the ARC. Right now, the server is transcoding down to 2 channel AAC. It would be great if it would transcode to 5.1 DD. So I think if the app is adjusted to allow HEVC and convert unsupported audio to 5.1 DD, we should be in business. The TV changes refresh rate and uses the HDR metadata, when using the smartcast app.

There are a couple of issues with the android mobile app, on my tablet. Not sure if this right place to mention, but here it is. When using the progress bar to move forward or backward, if you just tap where you want, the indicator moves, and nothing else happens. You have to slide it. Also, if the screen turns off, and you go back in, you have to recast to have any control. It would be nice if it would stay connected.

What bitrates are you testing at? I have several essentially full 4k HDR at around 40-50GBs.

Just wondering if the SmartCast app can process that high of bitrate.

We are properly using the Chromecast api and it's reporting that HEVC isn't supported, so that's why it is not direct playing. I'm aware that the device supports it, they're just not reporting it like they should.

Awesome. So, if only we had some kind of config file for this player that overrides the API (like how Plex has config docs that you can customize the xml) this would work better than my AppleTv4k for my rips. I still buy a lot of iTunes for that pretty Dolby Vision though. Waiting on HDR10+ and hoping Vizio upgrades via firmware.

Now I want to get a Dolby Vision, movie lol... I had one, but playback wasn't working well, for me. As my HTPC won't pass HDR metadata (I can't be bothered to figure out why).

My receiver only does HDR10 not DV (not even pass through, not 2.2) so I have to do straight to the TV hdmi in then optical back down to the receiver.

If your HTPC won’t pass through DV, is your HDMI output a compatible version? V1.4 doesn’t support DV, IIRC.

Forget using optical, try ARC. It works, great. Just make sure you set audio to bitstream.

I'm using my USB-C port, so it's displayport through Thunderbolt 3. It more than supports it. There's something else, going on. The stream HDR setting is grayed out.

I can’t use ARC. The only DV-compatible HDMI port on our TV set is HDMI 1. It’s also the only ARC port. So I have to use that port for my AT4k and HDMI 2 for my receiver, and thus no ARC.

Yes. You definitely should support 2.2, so something else is blocking your DV signal.

I'm not understanding why you can't use ARC. My receiver is connected to HDMI 1 on the TV. And it works just fine. Just one HDMI cable. Although, the receiver input that uses ARC is TV, and it switches to that, automatically.

Vizio does yes. I would put in a workaround but there is no way to detect that it's a Vizio TV. The only real way is a setting but that's not ideal because if you also have a regular chromecast without hevc support and you start forcing it, then that won't work and we'll have to start troubleshooting that.

Or mkv. Chromecast does not support ts.

I think smartcast is different. When I cast the .TS file from the VLC app, it played, perfectly. But I can't tell if the Dolby Vision, worked. The TV reported 'normal' and not Dolby Vision. I need to check the manual and see what it's suppposed to do.

It could be different, or vlc could be converting it.

I thought about that, but I can't tell. If it is, it does it, instantly. There's no delay, it just starts. But this raises another point. If I remux the file in any way, the Dolby Vision is lost. So I think that when the server is trying to remux it, it gets messed up and won't play.

@@Sizzlebox what container are your DV files in?

I don’t have any tools to make DV rips of my discs. It’s proprietary, so the open source world sticks to HDR. All my DV is from purchased iTunes content so that’s .m4v.
