I am running Emby on Windows 7. I have LAV and I have not touched the codecs for a couple years. I am not doing anything fancy like Bitstreaming these days. Just 1080p HDMI and TV speakers.

Should I just update LAV?

My particular experience for years has been to use Shark codecs and update them whenever I remember.

Use FDDSHOW for all formats except LAV for x265 because fddshow does not support it.

My reason to use fddshow is that with the MediaControl plugin, I control the languages and subtitle of the movies from my remote control.

But answering your question, yes.. update the LAV codecs because they have improvements that come day by day.

that's very complicated. shark + lav + ffdshow is too much setup for most people to handle.

just install lav filters and that's it. you'll be fine with default settings.

I just use the basic Shark codec pack.

Lots of people use LAV and love it but I was never able to iron out some bugs with certain subtitles not working.

Shark's codecs have very good defaults, as well as a suggested settings option that makes things brain dead simple.
