@ ebr

Quote from Plex forums

“We have however spent a lot of time trying various hacks and workarounds for the Sony TV this week, and found a solution!!
If your curious, the “fix” was to set the background of the screen to transparent instead of black, there was nothing wrong with the HDR data or anything specific to playback of HDR content. It’s definitely a hardware issue or something in the Android OS provided by Sony as it should only be applying the HDR data to the video and has no reason to change the black bars to grey, but we will be rolling out this fix in the next release.”

Interesting...thanks.

Now I just need to figure out exactly what to set transparent.  We obviously cannot have our activity window transparent.  Must be the player surface itself.  I'll investigate.

Cant wait to see results with fingers crossed a fix! From Kodi Forums

"There is a programmatic workaround, though, it's to have the root window (and eveything in-between) made transparent."

If the latest beta didn't have an effect, then I'm not sure I'll be able to make that particular hack work in our app.  It would be fairly complex and prone to creating problems for an extremely narrow use-case.

Thats a shame to hear :(...

Not sure what to do now as my other source is Xbox One X which doesn't work for 4K HDR / HEVC

I'l make sure i'm on the latest beta and double check.

This is the Leia RC5 fix in Kodi

Updated to Android Oreo now and still grey bars.

@ ebr any more luck on this one. The previous change you made that you asked me to attempt is that still in the code?

Anything the community can help with?

Yeah it's a little annoying.
On my Bravia HDR recognised but with grey bars (standard player, mxpro and VLC tested)

On my shield: hdr not recognised by inbuilt player (could switch the TV manual to hdr)
hdr recognised with mxpro and VLC (but I can't manage that those players switch fps?) and black bars.

So it works flawlessly in kodi on both devices.

So Plex has fixed this now as well as Kodi Leia B5. Getting a slight draw back to Plex for this reason!

Plex's response to the fix

Slighty crazy, device specific issue, but basically:

  • We needed to make the background (and window) transparent (instead of black) to remove the gray bars

  • When we did that previously, it introduced the “ghosting” that users reported previously. We’ve now added a new VideoSurface behind the actual VideoSurface that is rendered Black. This appears to resolve it.

@ ebr

Any update on the grey bars fix??  Plex is a step ahead of the game here.

I'm still interested in seeing a fix for this.  I'm adding HDR titles to my library more often and those grey bars are pretty off-putting.

Thanks!

Sorry, nothing new at this time.  This issue is limited to a particular set of TVs.

Thats a shame as I suspect there would be a significant amount of Sony TV users out there. Does the fix provided by Kodi and Plex give you anything to go on? Other than this issue I find Emby fantastic.

Anyway hoping you guys can come through with a fix for us Sony users! Cheers!

Curious about something.

What happens if the background is set to transparent?

What happens if the background is set to black?

What happens if you draw a black overlay on top of the video?

Especially interested in this last one.  If this shows up black could a "full time" black bar overlay be drawn on the screen to cover the grey bars with black?

As I said in kodi everythings fine.

it also works works with Emby if I use the Archos Video Player as External Player (mx, mxpro and vlc didn't) also Archos Player handles fps switch and passthrough including true HD, dts HD Master etc. coul not do that with mx and vlc either.

Thanks.
