I recently started adding 4K and HDR media into my library. I don't have much of a selection yet, but I'm already noticing an issue.

When I play back a letter-boxed 2.35:1 HDR movie from the Emby Android TV App, the bars are grey and the picture is generally very bright.  When I initiate playback from my PC or phone using the Emby "Play On" feature (DLNA), the bars are a proper black and the picture is darker than when played through the app.

In both cases, the TV detects it as an HDR signal and changes to HDR mode accordingly.

My television is a Sony Bravia XBR-55X850C (2015 Model) and is (AFAIK) running the latest beta.  The TV settings appear to be the same using either playback method.  I set up a DLNA profile for the television that basically allows direct playback of everything (Kodi-style), since the TV is capable of playing anything I have directly.

Let me know what I can provide to help resolve this issue.

And this only happens on HDR media?  It sounds like it is the display itself.  Some TVs have settings for whether to use gray or black bars in this instance.  Perhaps yours has different ones for the different modes?

I've got exact same issue on Sony 55X850C with Emby for Android TV. For HDR contents, TV switchs in HDR mode, but top and bottom bars for non-full screen video are grey. Regarding the picture quality, that @TedC reported "very bright", I think it's the expected render in HDR. I can test on my PC (connected to the same TV screen), if needed.

My understanding is that black bars are not correctly coded in 10bits color space.

FYI, Netflix and Amazon Prime are working well in HDR (black is black) with the same TV picture settings.

Just as an update on this - I am still seeing this same behavior.

Since my original post, I performed a firmware update and a factory reset.  As such, there are no differences between the settings for any input/app/whatever.

The HDR picture is still nice and bright, but the grey bars really throw everything off.  As Nague reported, HDR stuff from Netflix and Amazon look fine for me as well.

I am starting to get more 4K HDR titles and would like to see this issue resolved.

How can I help get this issue buried?

It would be interesting to see what HDR metadata is being passed through and if anything is bringing stripped. By chance does anyone have a HDfury Vertex they could use to analyze the output signal?

Can one of you guys take a picture of your TV screen with a phone or something to upload it here for us to see?

My money is on an overscan issue just reading the comments which should be adjustable.

I think maybe I have an idea of what this is.  You guys can test my theory with the next (not current) app beta.

Thanks.

I've seen this mentioned before with other software and I'll add this info which might be useful:
This seems to be a Sony issue and they say it can't be fixed.
I do not have a Sony to test.
First thing to check is to see if you have the latest TV FIRMWARE.

I've seen other people that report this "grey box issue" say:
x265 files have the grey bars
h265 files have black bars

although mediainfo says the h265 files have a aspect ratio of 16:9 but the films have black bars so therefor are 21:9.
maybe the black bars are burned in as part of the file on h265?

I've seen another user mention:
If you have grey bars then you have to switch the HDR Mode in Picture Settings of the TV from “Automatic to HLG” The grey bars get black but i am not sure if the HDR Mode is also matching to the actual content. <-- Might be worth a shot.

You can obviously try playing back the same exact media with VLC, MX Player or some other 3rd party player (not from Sony) to see how it also handles this.  Do any of the 3rd party players give you black bars vs grey bars?  This will help narrow it down for @ebr

It already is.

Ok,
Sorry for delay...

Tested on .49g I believe as that’s what app is reporting when I updated today...

Looks like too bar is now black but bottom bar still has a grey hue. Tried a couple of different HDR 4K movies.

However that being said I could “live” with it now as it’s far less distracting.

Tested again and Grey bars are still there. Was switching between YouTube and HDR 4K and you really notice the different between black and grey bars.

Okay, then I'm pretty sure this is something outside the app's control unfortunately.

Could be. Many topics on this too.

Amazon 4K UHD for me is ok but this forum would suggest Sony gave Amazon some code to fix it: https://community.so.../2278204/page/3

More people here on Reddit: https://www.reddit.c...with_grey_bars/ but no solution. Apparently Kodi is working ok?

Plex forum reporting same issue with Plex (I can confirm that too) https://forums.plex....black/197887/28 but again Kodi doesn't have this issue according to users.

Potential fix on Kodi forums here is to have white root background transparent? - https://forum.kodi.t...d=328294&page=2

Potentially its related to cropped images, maybe Emby can add bars?

Got this from Plex Android TV Beta notifications;

• [Sony Android TV] Fix grey background displayed when playing 21:9 HDR videos
