Audio delay on replay and random repeat while transcoding

I've recently been having an issue on the beta app playing streaming videos being transcoded where everytime I push the replay button, there is no audio for 5-10 seconds when the video jumps back. Also, the same time I started having that issue, there are random times when streaming a video where the video will freeze, the audio will repeat the last few seconds and the video smoothly resumes playing when the audio syncs back to the spot of the video freeze. I cannot say exactly when this started, however, it was within the past month, and after a beta app update. I'll try to upload a log file when next I replicate, but feel free to comment in the meanwhile in case it's something you all are aware of and probably working on.

I don't believe there have been any changes in the app that would affect any of this.  More than likely, it is related to either firmware on the device (there are known issues with current firmware) or, possibly how the transcodes are happening (if so) on the server.

I've noticed this too on the emby beta app. Not the audio delay issue but the random repeat issue.

1st instance - After about 3 minutes into the tv show, it jumped back to the beginning of the episode

2nd instance - After the episode was supposed to go off and auto-play the next episode, it jumped back to the middle of the episode it just played.

I have that issue as well Nisten, but I've narrowed it down to a problem in how Emby handles hardware transcoding in streaming to the Roku. If using only software it works fine for me. By chance do you have hardware transcoding enabled?

yeah, current transcoding options I have enabled are below

-Hardware encoding

-Hardware decoding (HEVC, VC1, and H264)

What exactly do you mean by that? there's no additional options for encoding like there is for decoding (at least with my setup anyway)

Ok yes with the transcoding format we use we've been seeing the quick sync encoder encoding with the wrong timestamps and that is causing this. @@Waldonnis do you know if this is still an issue in newer ffmpeg releases? thanks.

Currently testing the 20170827 ffmpeg build - haven't tried it with the emby beta roku app though

Seems to work fine with transcoding dvd size mkv files

No idea, unfortunately (first I've heard of it that I can recall).  A lot was fixed/changed/added since the 2016 build in libavcodec, at least, so it's worth checking a later build.

That's the first I've heard a confirmation to this too, although I've suspected as much. Over the past few months I tried over a dozen different builds of ffmpeg from before and after the default included with Emby. None made any difference. If anyone can point me to a download or compile a custom version for me to try, I'm willing to test to try to get it working. I built my server around hardware transcoding and cant use it :(

Iv noticed a niggly thing along the same lines, not enough for me to worry too much.  It started about 2 weeks ago - around the time of roku update - so it could be emby server, roku firmware, nextPVR version or Roku beta app - too many unknowns and it is not a big issue so iv not put the effort into solving/reporting it to date.

Issue is, if you are wathcing a recorded a TV show, and it overruns  (as they all do here in Aus so we pad for 15 minutes), then at about the time the show should end, we get the screen freeze but the sound continue.  I just click the right arrow on the roku and it fixes itself.  All the house know to do that now and no complaints.

I have a theory that this is to do with the next recording starting up on the same tuner' i.e recording on channel 10 starts at 8:30, then at 9:30 we get the freeze - which is the time that another recording starts on the same channel.

As I said, its no biggie as you quickly press right arrow and all is well - but this def did not happen older than 2 weeks ago.

You could try something more recent.

Changed to 9/4 ffmpeg build - Will try to test tonight or the next time I get a chance.

Also does it matter which "linking" we have the build set to for the dlls & exes? I've been using static linking but there's a shared linking option

I have seen the random repeat issue as well a few times.

Usually its just 1 second or 2 that repeats, but it does seem to be random.

Tested w/ the 9/4 build, still an issue. I was trying to watch a movie and 20 minutes in, it jumped 10 minutes back (reproduced on regular emby app & emby beta app)

This is still with QuickSync enabled and it goes away with it disabled?

Didn't have this issue prior to enabling Quick Sync so I'm assuming yes - I'll turn off QuickSync later today in order to verify
