Guest asrequested
Is 1TB enough? As for which to buy, neither of those. Try this one. https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B005LUTNUM/ref=mp_s_a_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1503848709&sr=1-4&refinements=p_n_feature_keywords_three_browse-bin%3A4990426011&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_FMwebp_QL65&keywords=hgst+1+tb+hard+drive&dpPl=1&dpID=41NDC43378L&ref=plSrch

Guest asrequested
Here's a new one https://www.amazon.com/HGST-Ultrastar-3-5-Inch-Enterprise-0A39289/dp/B0046TCOO6/ref=sr_1_1?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1503869801&sr=1-1&keywords=hgst+1tb&refinements=p_n_feature_keywords_three_browse-bin%3A4990426011
dcrdev 251
Yep definitely don't go wd red for a single disk, they only make sense in an array. The HGST drives are mean't to be some of the best - good recommendation, I believe in a study done by Google and few other companies, the HGST drives had the lowest failure rate of all the 'prosumer' drives. Guest asrequested
I have 8 HGST Deskstar NAS drives. They work, very well.
Guest asrequested
You can look at Backblaze's stats on the dives they use. https://www.backblaze.com/blog/hard-drive-reliability-stats-q1-2016/ Edited August 29, 2017 by Doofus
CBers 6766
It seems daft that the HGST drives have a lower failure rate than the WD ones, seeing as WD own HGST

CBers 6766
WD are just the parent company. HGST (hitachi) is a separate company with its own technologies. HGST is a wholly owned subsidiary of WD, but you'd think they would utilise technology that they have within the group.
PenkethBoy 2063
IIRC HGST has to stay separte for 2 years as part of the deal Once that expires then all bets are off - hopefully WD uses HGST processes - time will tell
naeonline 27
Get the HGST Helium drives if you can as they are the best and have the lowest failure rates, or WD Red PRO because the WD Red PRO warranty is 5 yrs and not 2/3.

PenkethBoy 2063
ok then - HGST drives may or may not get worse after that but hopefully WD get better
Guest asrequested
It would be foolish if they change a winning product. But such idiocies have happened before. Time to buy a bunch of HGST drives
SWKerr 4
Check the Warranty on anything you buy. The Reds come with a good Warranty and balanced performance. It all comes down to capacity and warranty with pricing.
Guest asrequested
I'd rather them not fail
