Emby Server keeps my PC (Server) awake

The last days I have noticed that my pc (that works as a server) doesn't go to sleep anymore when there are no activity's or shared files in use. When I close Emby Server my PC sleeps just fine when needed.

My power setting is set to go to sleepmode after 10 minutes of inactivity. Now I see my PC is still awake in the morning when it normally used to be in sleepmode.

I have never had this before with Emby Server. Is there a new setting I don't know of or can it be something else in the last Emby updates?

Thanks.

Emby keeps your pc awake in order to accept connections and serve your media.

If your computer is asleep it's not accessible and emby is useless.

Although a feature to enable/disable 'prevent computer from sleeping' for cases where the only access is local so making the server sleep during known downtime could be handy

I use Kodi and when the PC is in sleepmode Kodi wakes the PC automatically so useless is not right. It has always worked the way I use my power settings so something must have changed in Emby Server causing my pc to stay awake.

Such a switch is fine with me as long as no other pc or device is using the Emby Server my pc goes in sleep mode.

What you'll want to do is make sure there are no apps connected to the server.

I tried that but there seems to be something weird with the Emby app for android than.

The server shows me I'm connected with Google Chrome and that is correct because I want to see who and what devices are connected. Emby Server also shows there are two Emby for android devices are connected. My phone and my sons phone. There is becomes weird because on my sons phone the Emby app was closed but the server shows it's connected. When het opened Emby and closed it again the device disappeared from the server screen.

So I waited for the pc to go to sleep mode but still the pc stayed awake. So I opened the Emby server screen again with Google Chrome and there were both the android devices again visible while they were not open on our phones. It shows they were last seen several minutes ago.

So my question is, does this unused devices also keeps the pc awake or should Emby let the PC go to sleep with this screen? Why are these devices ven visible while they are not open on the phones.

There is no way of telling Emby to disconnect from these devices for as far as I have seen?

update: No problem with the ios app.on my ipad. Dissapears when closed and doesn't return out of itself.

To find out what may be stopping this, open a command prompt as administrator, then run powercfg -requests.

If nothing there, it should go to sleep.

My Roku's wake it up when they logon to emby so a few seconds delay.

The android apps remain online/connected as long as they are in recent apps. You have to completely kill the app to get it to logout (and keep your 'remember me' setting), unless you manually logout in the app every time.

Emby will wake the computer? That didnt seem to work to me, befor that last post i put my server to sleep and attempted to connect but it just timed out...

Edit: yeah, I cant seem to wake the server remotely, and i cant find any power options related to it apart from 'allow wake timers' which is enabled. (windows 7 hp)

Even when all my devices are not connected and not seen by the Emby Server my pc refuses to go to sleep.

When I close the Server application "MediaBrowser.ServerApplication.exe" my pc goes to sleep again. This is really the only thing that is keeping my pc awake.

The latest Update  doesn't solve it.

  • Rework projects for .net core
  • Add dedicated next pvr tuner option (just a wrapper around m3u)
  • Add fix for folder rip transcoding
  • Add reminder that folder rip transcoding is experimental
  • Rework active recordings to show in all places immediately
  • Add server transcoding option to dictate whether on the fly subtitle extraction is allowed
  • Improve handling of disconnected drives
  • Add guide data error handling
  • Set user friendly season name

I woulod interpet that as your data drives/nas sleeping or being offline not the server.

My pc that has the server software on it also has all the neede data and drives on it. That PC that I use as a server needs to go off when nobody is using Emby or the PC itself. That always worked but now the "MediaBrowser.ServerApplication.exe" is preventing the sleep mode some how when nobody is using Emby.

A new screen and in my opinion Emby Server should let the pc with the server software on it go to sleep mode when there is no other device playing media files and using Emby. This screen shows again the (recent) devices that were seen several minutes ago but that's bull because I know for sure I haven't connect with Emby on my Android phone for hours (just for testing) and yet is says last seen 8 minutes ago. How? Why do Android devices show up in recent devices and ipad IOS devices not?

So to be sure how it works. This screen needs to be empty with no device (playing media or not) to go to sleep mode or can it show those unused devices that are not playing any media and still go to sleep mode?

It also says "Active Devices". This screen shows only one active device and the rest does nothing. I don't need to see "recent" devices. Only devices that are busy.

I have the same problem with my Win7 server no longer going to sleep,

I can reboot and then it works for some time, but eventually the sleep fails again.

Havent't thought of Emby Server being the problem - but this post makes me suspiscious.

Looked at my Active Devices - and yes, my Android was there, seen as active 4 minutes ago.

And I have not used the app since yesterday evening. I know for sure it was closed yesterday because I did a "Close All Apps"  on my phone.

Does the Emby App keep running in background keeping the connection alive?

It seems a little odd to me because Emby is in the group of apps not allowed to run in background, ie. always go to sleep.

It disappeared as expected from Active Devices after some minutes when turning of the phone,

If you're running the android app it could possibly be due to the app's background sync service. it is on our list to review for a future update to the app, thanks.

This was an issue for me.  I ended up removing all android clients because of this.

Seems to be the android, yes.

I have logged it out for some days ago and my PC has gone to sleep like a baby :-)

While waiting for a review of the Android App, I very much support the idea of a switch so I could tell Emby Server not to keep the PC awake. I'm running Emby Server as backend for Emby for WMC, so there is no need for Emby Server to run unless WMC is being used to view something.

The switch of course only if it is Emby keeping the PC awake - and not the way the Android makes the connection. A connection from a browser seems to do no harm.

There seems to be an issue with Chrome for android as well :/ i have one user that isnt very computer literate that likes to have the webpage open and simply lock his android device. So the app is not active at all, and still shows up as an active device 'last seen 2hours ago'. If it was last seen 2hrs ago... Why is it considered an active device? Keeping my server awake and wasting power.

I abandoned the android app as much as possible for now, and im still stuck with this problem. This is becoming quite frustrating.

Might not be related to the web app. Best thing to do is see how to report a problem, and we'll do our best to help. thanks !

@@Luke Not quite sure what to do to move on.

This post is about Emby Server keeping Windows from sleeping.

And quite some screen dumps have been provided.

With fingers pointing against the Android app as one possible source - and that is waiting for an app review. Fair.

But it seems not to be the only suspect.

I have recently seen Emby Server keeping my PC awake although I have not used my Android app since.

At least Emby Server was only thing showing up in powercfg -requests.

At the moment I'm manually stopping/starting Emby Server when needed.

Having my Windows running 20 hours a day for no use is not a favorite of mine  ;)

I have not seen response to the proposal of making it configurable to prevent computer from sleeping.

No problem reporting a problem - but I cannot see what to put into that, not already here.

Because I would like to investigate exactly what activity might be causing it and that is why I am asking for the details. Thanks !

I understand that - which is why I from my side am asking what you need besides what already has been put into the topic.

From my point of view there is no logfile showing "errors" - just a correlation between:
1) Seeing this in a "powercfg - requests"
SYSTEM:
[PROCESS] \Device\HarddiskVolume3\Users\MC550\AppData\Roaming\MediaBrowser-Server\System\MediaBrowser.ServerApplication.exe
2) The Android App as an active device looking at the Dashboard. And it stays active until explicitly logged off or phone restarted.
Not sure if other devices can trigger the same issue. Could seem so from other posts.

Basically said, using Android App is one activity which always keeps Windows awake.

And I simply do not know what else to look for...
It is not bad will - just lack of knowledge.
I'm no Windows guru, but I suppose that as long as "powercfg - requests" has outstandings, Windows will be kept awake.

Earlier in this topic you mentioned that the Android App is on the list for a future review.
Which is fair to wait for.

But it takes me to what some of us in this topic has mentioned.
We have no need for Emby Server to keep Windows awake.
So parallel to troubleshooting we would like to switch of the keep-awake.

Maybe this will help?

I know something within "MediaBrowser.ServerApplication.exe"  is causing the problem.

I know that because when I shutdown the server application my PC sleeps like a baby. Also when I run this command-line my pc goes to sleep with "MediaBrowser.ServerApplication.exe"  opened. It does this also when playing media so that's not really an option but it overrides the "MediaBrowser.ServerApplication.exe" from preventing sleep mode.

POWERCFG -REQUESTSOVERRIDE PROCESS MediaBrowser.ServerApplication.exe Display System

Then your server will sleep when it is actually in use.

Isn't this all simply a symptom of the nature of Android apps?  I mean, they never actually close unless you specifically go out of your way to close them.  Therefore, it remains active and, thus, communicating with your server.

Whether server will sleep when actually in use must depend on the usage.

In my case, still using WMC as player, it would not sleep.

In such a case heula's fix would work, I think (I'll try it).

But still, if it works, it should be a switch in Emby GUI - not something a user should know how to run in CMD.

It might very well be the nature of Android - but from the bottom of my missing knowledge I would have thought that the app could check if in foreground/closed or not - maintaining connections accordingly.
