Live TV Hardware Guide

Hi Guys

Long time MB / Emby user. I have recently had a look at Live TV after noting all the work done. I'm coming from WMC and HDhomerun tuners. I'm keen to finally bring everything into Emby for LiveTV.

Is there a current guide on which tuners. specifcally HDHomerun, are supported / confirmed working with current version of Emby? I have older non DLNA and reading some threads it seemed they originally weren't supported but maybe they are now?

Appreciate any help.

I have Comcast here. I use an HDHomerun PRIME and a Comcast cable card. It supports up to three turners. I am about to pickup a full subscription for schedules direct.

I had a little trouble with my initial endeavor.

1. Every morning I would notice that the EMBY process would crash. I tied it down to high CPU utilization. I fixed this by adjusting transcoding settings.

2. After resolving the above I had trouble with high memory utilization. I addressed this by disabling DLNA blast (I found this on another topic on this forum). Note: my Emby service does get restarted nightly.

3. Direct playback to an Emby Theatre desktop client (hosted on a W10 mini pc) stuttered. I found that ET supports hardware transcoding and has features that enhance video quality. This for me is 90% fixed. I think I just need a nicer PC in that space to resolve completely.

4. Navigating through the guide is a bit slow, from my ET direct play clients. I haven't had time to correct this.

Hi, please check out our live tv wiki and let us know if you have any questions:

Thanks.

Thanks Luke - yes I did see this wiki page also in my research.

Can I assume because no specific HDHomerun tuner is specified in it, that all HDHomerun tuners are suppported? If thats the case, then I guess I have a issue which I'll have to log.

So my issue is the 'spinning circle' while trying to view live TV. I have tested across devices and browsers with the same results.

Here's my server log of an example

Ah, so I just set mine up last week. I got a little stuck at first as the initial setup of the HDHomerun isn't clearly outlined.

1. Install the cable card into the HDHomerun, connect it to your LAN (with the unit powered down)

2. Power the device on (I setup a reserved DHCP address for the device on my LAN).

3. download the management tool.

4. Update the firmware on the HDHomerun.

5. Call your cable provider and activate the card and synch it to the HDHomerun.

From your HDHomerun management tool, run a scan on for channels.

Now the device is ready to be connected to your Emby server. Select add tuner (server dashboard - live tv)

Setup your TV guide service (I am using schedules direct). Most of them will support a trial period. Find one that supports Emby. They will give you authentication credentials once you sign up. To add the provider select "Add" under guide providers (server dashboard - live tv).

Once complete select "refresh guide data" (server dashboard - live tv).

Once complete you should be able to watch tv.

Thanks for your assistance T. I have basically done the above - albeit in Australia we dont cable version of the tuner. But essentially the same.

I can see my Guide data in Emby just no streaming / recording of actual programs.

It looks like it is getting stuck. It could be due to weak signal strength. I would check that your HDHR firmware is up to date.

Cheers. The HDHR has been in use for many years, the station signal is good. I updated the firmware yesterday after reading threads on here :(. I will try some additional channels

Ps. I can click on any of the channels via the HDHomerun config tool and have them open in vlc from the same box running emby server.

Well today I installed latest Emby beta onto a spare PC and was able to get Live TV to work with my HDHR. Not sure what my next steps might be with my main Emby server?

I have just completed a uninstall / reinstall. I used the backup plug in for backup / restore. Unfortunately this hasn't changed the result for streaming Live TV for me. Same experience.

@@Luke is there anything else you can suggest I try here?

Laptop (working Live TV) was via Wifi. The problem child is my main server (Windows 2012) and it's via gig ethernet. Local firewall is off on both

Problem solved - I'm not sure why or what. But after restarting the Emby server app (with plugin update) Live TV is now working. Thanks for helping me along the way. Now to get Premier enabled on my phone again :(
