otispresley 81
I am just wondering why Amazon Alexa requires an Emby Connect account? If it is on the same network, shouldn't you just be able to input the IP address of the Emby server and a local account, or is this already planned? I don't have an Emby Connect account because i prefer to have everything local... which is why I did not try Plex after discovering that you had to have their account to use it. I am glad it worked out the way it did though, because I like Emby MUCH better than what I have seen from Plex.
Solution Luke 37022 Posted August 10, 2017 Solution Share Posted August 10, 2017 The login screen that you use to link your Emby Server with Alexa is only allowed to communicate with https addresses. Since our Emby Connect API uses https, we can use that to determine your Emby Server address. If we let users put in any address, they would just come back to us and tell us "not working" due to the https requirement. Additionally, the voice commands flow from Amazon web servers to your Emby Server, so it's not quite as local as you think, even though the devices are inside your home network. Does that answer your question?

x-cimo 23
Nevertheless, I think you should consider allowing direct connection, some user like me, have https, and if there was a popup or a warning on the screen that would probably prevent the none techie people from complaining. The Alexa system is not designed for local LAN access. Everything is run through Amazon in the cloud. Your echo device talks to Amazon and then Amazon talks back to your local Emby server. Angelblue05 4130
I think what he meant is there should be a way to provide a way to connect without having an emby connect account. nikc0069 2
I just found this thread and was wondering something similar. I have my emby server behind caddy so have https on the reverse proxy. I don't use connect. The ability to have Alexa communicate with my server over my own hosted https would be very useful.
Angelblue05 4130
To provide your server information to Alexa requires a secured connection. Since not everyone has https setup, we opted to support Emby connect only at this time. I don't know if another way to provide that information will be added at a later time. It depends on the big guys at the top
