Live TV Improvements Request

I know some of these have already been requested by others in other posts.  I just wanted to get a post out there and get my opinions in the bucket.

I/my family have been a directv genie user for years.  It works, and it works well..   I currently pay for directv AND comcast in hopes that emby will get over the last few hurdles so I can kill directv.

Strike Through Items are complete

  1. Hide SD Duplicates of HD channels.  Yes I know there are hacky fixes, like manually doing this...   But it would be nice to have this feature native in emby. (kind of a big deal, it sucks to set this manually then redo it when comcast adds a channel or moves channels around, some basic logic in emby would be nice)
  2. Guide, We really like the FireTV guide with the current channel display in the upper left (PIP video).  This feels like other commercial PVR's and it feels natural.    Maybe shrink the live display to fit more guide options? Or shrink the guide lines a little so more options are visible (minor)? That said none of the other apps have this nice preview guide display like android/firetv it would be nice to have this in Emby Theater at least.
  3. The single biggest reason I cant pull the plug on directv is recordings.   I really wish users could only manage and see their own recordings, with an option in the admin user access page to allow that person to see/manage all others recordings.   For example if little Kimmy records a cartoon, Teenage Becky shouldn't see it in her list of recordings.  However DAD has the check box set for "see all recordings" and he can see all users recordings, as well as manage them if that check box is also set.    Plus If I let a friend stay over for the weekend I don't want to see their recordings in our list and I don't want them seeing ours.  It's just a free for all today.  You can do this with most commercial DVR's out there today.
  4. When the user has the user setting to enabled for  "live tv recording management"  That user should be able to delete recorded TV without needing the "Allow Media Deletion" security setting checked.    I want little Kimmy to be able to delete her cartoon when she is done watching it, but I do not want her to be able to delete core movies and media from the server.    This goes hand and hand with #3 as users who record shows should be the only ones to see them and be able to delete them unless they have a "manage all" flag set in user settings.  Added in THIS POST   (added as of 3.2.35.0)
  5. I would also like to add the ability to "Mark as Played" on the individual episode, this seems totally missing in emby theater?   But on the web browser I have to click the info icon then the "Check" to mark as played.   A simple check on this screen would be nice, and an option at all in ET would be great too. The only available option in ET is to mark the whole series as played not an individual episode.  Added in THIS POST

  6. Skip (forward and backwards) is in different time chunks depending on the client used.   For example FireTv seems to skip like 40 seconds with each push, the web interface skips about 15 seconds per push..  It would be nice if this was standardized between clients.  THIS POST

Those small items aside, its been working pretty well lately.    The hard work of the team is paying off.    :D

It would also be great to have pageup/pagedown keys in the guide work also.

I assumed there was some shortcut key for this but I guess not?  Yes a way to page up or down would be nice.  Generally the channel up and down button does a page up and down when in the guide.

Guide that behaves properly and doesn't go all over the place as you are going up and down between channels it needs to be like in the roku app and WMC

I would also like to Add:

To be clear, a user with the below settings should be able to DELETE LIVE TV but not movies, music, videos or pictures, LIVE TV ONLY.  Yet this is not the case in the latest version, users require permission to delete all kinds of media from the server.   Please make emby allow users with these settings to delete live tv recordings, since they are allowed "Live TV recording MANAGEMENT".

The Roku app has this now using the FF/Rew buttons.

Please consider #3 & #4, I would absolutely love to start using emby for my TV/PVR and cancel DirecTv.

To the list of improvements requested I would add a notification bar indicator similar to the Windows Media Center red dot to indicate a recording is in progress.  It is very helpful to easily be able to tell the PC is recording and should not be rebooted.

Edit: never mind, I see what you are asking for, something in the task bar on windows, like the below image.

This wouldn't work if you were running the server remote (in my case on Linux) though.

I always check the dashboard before I reboot.

Sure, there is always an exceptional use case. Congrats on taming Linux.

But for most users this would improve the Live TV experience.

This feature used to be available in ET, but the user interface was re-arranged and now the ability to mark an episode as played appears to be gone.

+1 this, as well as the long press for multi-select.  I am no longer able to delete a group of shows by long click within the series, I have to do it from the top level which affects the entire series, or go 1 by 1 on each episode.  This is new as of at least .26 stable, on all series recorded or not.

I like the idea of a more explicit prompt from the dashboard when you choose Restart or Shutdown warning that a recording is in progress and will be stopped if you continue...

#6.  Skip (forward and backwards) is in different time chunks depending on the client used.   For example FireTv seems to skip like 40 seconds with each push, the web interface skips about 15 seconds per push..  It would be nice if this was standardized between clients.

It would be nice if the FF/RW time chunks were configurable.

The Fire app goes 30 seconds forward and 10 seconds back.  Commercials are almost always in some combination of 30 second blocks so this seems to work pretty well...

Well I kept overshooting them when i was on vacation this last weekend.  It was annoying...   I had to then go back a few times.   with the 15 second jump on the web browser i push it 15 times to get past commercials. That's about 225 seconds, divide that by 30 and that's 7.5 pushes on the fireTv, I cant do a half a button push so i overshoot by 15 seconds on fire tv.  So on fire the only option is to undershoot and hit it 7 times then wait a little longer...

I think forward and back should match at 15 seconds...  If not, then all clients should at least match no?   So when using fire I know hit the button 7 times and wait.........    That way I dont have to remember oh its 7 for fire, 15 for web, 10 for xxxx, etc.  I do kind of like the 15 second jump though, as i skip through I sometimes see something i like and stop.    Maybe its the additional station previews or station commercials that make the time odd, I'm not sure..

Remember I'm pointing out inconveniences and differences from commercial PVR's that make it hard to move to emby.  We've all gotten used to Tivo's, DirecTV, AT&T, Comcast..  Emby should mirror those so migration feels normal.   In my opinion that is.

The apps being consistent is a good idea but forward and back being the same is not IMO.

The standard for most video apps (and DVRs) a long time ago was 30 seconds forward and 10 back.  This is because the reason you go forward is different from the reason you go back.  You go forward to skip something relatively long (commercial or opening credits) and those things are usually in 30 second blocks.  You go back to re-hear some piece of dialog you just missed and 30 seconds is just way too long for that.

true, if its 30 forward...  then 30 back is too much..  but 15/15  :)     I understand though. I'll try this 30 second skip a little more first.   I know its an option on other commercial pvr's but not default.  I'll try it out a bit more first.  But yea if we could standardize this 10/30 through clients that would be nice.

IMO 15 is too short for skipping things like commercials.  Also, if I were to change it now I'm sure I'd have to duck to avoid all of the people crying about how I just doubled the number of clicks it takes them to get past their commercials... ;).

Why do US citizens always think they live in the center of the world?!
