Live TV playback issue (Mainly with HD Channels)

Hi All,

I've recently upgraded my set-up  .. Old set-up was - Physical server : self built, running Server 2012R2 Std with a 6 disk Storage Spaces pool  ; HTPC Win 7 with WMC and Emby for Windows Media Center, with a BlackGold PCie TV tuner card.

TV source is UK over the air digital DVB T-2

My new set-up is a new self built server running server 2016 std with an 8 disk Storage Spaces pool with SSD tiers, With the BlackGold TV tuner card from the HTPC, I've also added a Nvidia NVS510 graphics card to use for transcoding (had it lying around so thought, what the hell !)

The HTPC has been re-built with Win 10 Creators Edition and running Emby Theater for Windows.

Emby server is Version 3.2.19.0 and Emby Theater is 2.7.9 and DVB-Link server is v 6.0.0 14499 and the plugin is the latest.

The idea being that I wanted to A) have TV viewing and Films etc. under the same interface, and B) be able to record shows from the sever, so not having to have the HTPC on to do this.

I purchased a high quality coax cable to go from my outlet to the server, and am running DVB-Link server with the TV Sources add-in on the server.

I wasn't a big fan of the new interface originally, but am really liking it now !

The issue I have is that all of the HD channels either don't start at all or start glitching 5 or so seconds in then cutting out, the SD channels all play fine.

From my observations it looks like the SD channels are being transcoded and the HD channels are being direct played.

When I have the diagnostics window up in DVB-Link Server, I can see the stream playing well before anything starts on the Theatre system, there is a delay of 20 ish seconds before anything appears on the TV.

I should mention that my TV series and films all play absolutely fine.

I don't know a great deal about video streams, transcoding, and all of the many options and settings available in Emby Server\Theater and DVB-Link, but have played with a fair few of them, but nothing seems to make any difference.

I've attached a few logs from attempts top play a few HD channels this morning, in the hope that one of you experts out there might be able to spot something amiss.

Many thanks for taking a look.

Damob

Just to add, I get the same issue when using the web client on my main PC, but if I use the DVB Player it all plays fine, so the issue has to be somewhere between Emby and or the DVB-Link plugin ??

Update:

I've ditched DVB-Link Server, I only had a day left to buy the TV Sources add in, so thought i'd try DVB-Viewer ... A much nicer program in my opinion, does everything in one place, channel scanning was way faster and built in EPG and cheaper !

I've also got transcoding working from the Nvida NVS card, I was using the ODE driver but realised from the logs that that driver did not support NVenc so switched to the QNF version which does.

I also added a separate SSD to the server dedicated to the transcoding temp cache.

Although things are generally working better, I'm still unable to successfully watch HD channels, they do play for longer (and it does vary depending on the channel) but cuts out after 10mins or so.

This only happens if I leave the quality setting to auto - which always goes to 1080 @ 60Mbps which is Direct Playing. If I change it to either 1080 @ 10Mbps or 720 @ 4Mbps it is transcoding and plays fine.

But again, I can play any of my films at 1080 @ 60Mbps - Direct Play, without issue.

So again, I'm somewhat at a loss to understand where the problem is, It can't (as far as I can tell) be my network .. everything's gigabit - Netgear ProSafe switch which links to my Asus VDSL router, all devices are connected to the Netgear obviously. And the fact that I can play HD .mkv films fine seems to prove that.

So what am I missing ? Where should I be looking ?

Any help greatly appreciated.

Cheers

You are talking about Theater, right? Have you tried to play with the different playback settings, DXVA, Copy Back and so on?

You could also evaluate playback with the Android app.

@@Damob9k, what app are you trying to play from? Since you say you changed software, can we please see new logs based on that? thanks !

Hi Luke,

The main PC I'm playing on is using Emby Theater 2.7.9, server is now on 3.2.20.0 but I'm also testing via a browser on my main PC.

I've installed LAV Filters 0.69 on both my HTPC and main PC - as this is what DVB Viewer installed by default, so I thought I'd match the codecs on both PC's

Sorry I haven't had any time to properly test as I've been writing powershell scripts for work stuff all evening for the last two days ! but I've watched a bit of TV and have it playing now and it seems to be running well :)

As it all seems to be playing properly now, I'll test more with more channels as I have seen differing results from different channels, and update in a day or so.

Cheers

Well, apart from the above glitch :) ... Could you take a look at the logs and see if you can see a reason for it glitching out ?

Thanks

Hi Luke,

It just stopped playing.

Was playing ITV HD channel for nearly 20mins then just stopped and returned to the screen where you select Play, record.

This is on Theater 2.7.9

Later on I played a TV episode from my server and it played without fail (which has always been the case with stored media files)

I'll set it playing later and save the logs off.

Cheers
