New app - folder movie images squished

Playing with the new app. Works well!

One thing I noticed is that when I go into folders from the main screen, then select a folder, all the movies seem to be using a poster image in a landscape shape, squishing it.

My guess is there is a setting I missed somewhere. Can I set it to use the landscape image instead, or make the poster image unsquished?

Thanks!

I wonder if this could be the same issue I was having where the server was putting the art image as the primary image.  @@Luke asked me to send some logs but, of course, I totally forgot about it.  If you go on the web app, hover over a movie, click the 3 dots, and choose edit images, it will show if the art image is the primary image.

Thank you both for the replies!

This issue happens when I click on "folders" or "recordings" from the "Library" menu. But if I click on "Movies" or "TV" the images are correct.

I confirmed that the primary image for the movies is the correct poster.

I also checked to make sure the web interface looked right. To test I logged in as the same user that the roku uses:

And I updated my server to the latest version 3.2.17 just in case, and I still get the same squished images for my folders. Sorry for the blurry image:

I will also attach a server log in case it helps.

thanks!

Just for fun, I removed the folder from my library, re-scanned the database, and then added it backin (making sure to set it to "Movie" type folder in my library). My thinking was that this would refresh the whole folder. Unfortunately, it did not help my roku folder issue. :(

The issue is that you just don't have thumb images for your movies, right? We need to have the app just use a poster layout.

I wonder if the logic behind using thumbs for folders was for home videos, etc. Is there any way to add an option on which to use per folder?

But, it is not using the thumb images either. Almost all of the movies do have thumb images, and the same movie appears to use a thumb image in other areas of the app. For example, clicking on "Movies" under the "Continue watching" section:

Sorry, to clarify i meant the app is using landscape instead of portrait for folders so when it pulls an image from home movies it fits that orientation. If it's set to portrait, then home movies images will be squished. The only reason i say that is I'm assuming @@ebr is figuring most people will enter "movies" to watch movies and folders for other stuff.

Have you thought about taking your folders and just making libraries from them, then you can get there straight from the home screen?

The issue  here is you are using the folder browsing mode, not the normal library views..  When in this mode, we have no idea what type of images you will have and the new Roku display components cannot have different sized/shaped items in the same list/grid so we have to pick a shape.  For folder view we chose landscape because we were expecting things like videos with thumbnails instead of movies with posters.

You can improve it somewhat by enabling enhanced images in the settings in the app.

Ah, it seems I have been using the folders feature in a way unintended for a long time then :) . I always used folders as a way to have a quick way to find what I am looking for (like all he kids movies, or the chic flicks for the wife).

So, if I go in and uncheck the folders so they are not combined into a single library, they will all show up top? I will try it, might solve my issue. I wonder if they will all show up when I do to "movies". I will test it out when my kids arent using the server.

How is the "recordings" library supposed to work? When I click on it I get ugly boxes for Series and Movies, and then the same squished images for the shows. Is there a better way to get to all my recordings and not just the latest ones?

Go to the server dashboard (manage server). On the left side click library. Then click "Add media library".

Choose your content type and a name (Kids Movies, etc.). Click the "Add" button.

5921e82e5e32f_Capture2.png

Choose the folder where you have kids movies. The server should scan. Now you will have a Kids Movies Library on the main screen at the top.

Do this for all the folders you have.

If you want to keep a Movie library where all the movies you have are in one section, do nothing more.

If you just want the libraries you just added and don't want an "All movies" library, from the dashboard screen click the home button in the upper left corner. Once you are there, click the 3 lines in the same spot, go down and click on settings.

Click "Home Screen". Scroll down to "Library Folders" and UN-check all of your libraries where it asks you to "automatically group content".

You should be good to go.

Thank you for such detailed instructions!! Actually, that is how I already had it set up. Every folder (kids, chic flicks, superheros) were set up as separate sources. But they are not showing up in the app except for under folders.

Could is be a user preference setting? I remember something that gave the option to combine libraries into all movies where I have all the sources checked because I did also want a full movie list. Could this be keeping it from showing?

Thanks!

Create another library for all movies, add all of your movie folders (kids, chick flicks, etc). Then go back and uncheck all the libraries in that setting asking if you want them combined.

What happens is when you check the libraries in that setting, the server takes those libraries away from the main screen and creates its own "movies" section. So if you want an "all movies" do as stated above and that should work and the rest of your libraries should show as well.

Thank you for the help!

I was able to get the libraries to display on my roku after unclicking them on my user profile display settings for combining libraries. Now I have fast access from the top of the app. I was also able to disable the "folders" view in the admin portal as it is no longer needed now.

Now, when I click on a library, it shows the "latest" movies, and "resume" movies, and "suggested" movies. But I need to go all the way to the bottom and click on "All Movies" to see them all. Is there a way for me to see "all movies" directly? Since latest and resume are options already on the homepage it does not have much value to me in the library.

thanks!

Ok, cool.

So the only open question for this thread is for the "Recordings" library. When I click on this I still get squished images for the shows and movies. Is this expected?

I have exactly the same issue as farside847 mentioned in the beginning

Now, I understand where it comes from

I think folder navigation would be better with the portrait than the landscape shape - especially as it would make the change from the old app smoother

Actually, the folders themselves are better in landscape, but their contents (categories, and first and foremost movies) better in portrait

Is it possible to try it somewhere (Beta or any other think) ?

I also have this issue on the main screen under "Continue Watching" and "Latest Shows" - but I also found how to fix it (sort of). I only experience this if I have backdrops disabled. If I turn on backdrops and reload Emby then they are no longer squished.

EDIT: So in my case, the squished images were ones that did not have "thumb" images. I'm guessing that since backdrops are landscape, it would automatically use those if a true "thumb" image was missing - so that's why enabling backdrops fixed the issue.

I played around with enabling the "enhanced" images in the roku app. this is better, but no great. Now, the full poster image is displayed in the correct proportion but there is a large border around the image. It would be better if it handled images like the rest of the app does.
