Photos in photo library not displaying

I've been running Emby for some time and whilst everything else works perfectly, I've been unable to get Photos to display. Emby sees the folders and will display the JPGs as a square but when I click on it I do not see the photo, all I get is a little square in the middle of the display (as if a plug-in is missing) and chevrons (left and right) to navigate the photos.

 

I get this issue on Firefox, and Chrome on Linux. It works find on a Samsung SMART TV, Windows 10 phone and Windows 10 desktop Firefox and Chrome.

 

So it suggests that I have something missing on linux which is preventing the photos from being displayed. FYI I'm running Kubuntu 16.10.
