Have to pay to watch my own files with Emby?

Hi Everyone.

I'm new to Emby, saw a review for it today and decided to install it on my Synology NAS. I got the server installed and running, it performed the scan of the directories i set up in the library. I download the iOs App to my iPad and connected to the server through my home networkd, the app can see my library and has all the thumbnails and synopsis for episodes and movies etc.

1) I have to say I like the looks of the Emby interface more than any other ones I've tried, Plex, Synology's proprietary, and one other I can't remember. I commend a job well done.

Now my question, when I go to play an episode or a movie I get the Unlock feature screen asking me to subscribe to Emby Premiere. So does this mean that before I can watch my files using Emby apps I have to pay a subscription?

P.S. I have used my browser and can access the files and watch them on my laptop but I would rather use my Xbox.

Hi @@ushkowski, welcome ! Yes, and the reason is we are not a premium content provider where we can just give away the software and charge you for content. For us, the software is our product, it's our full-time job, and that is why we are unable to make it completely free. But as you said the browser version is free so we do have some free options. Thanks and enjoy.

Most emby apps require you to have a subscription. It's well worth the money IMO. There's lots of updates and the support you get from @@Luke and others is really good. Emby has come along way since it's video browser days.

Been using the service for over a year now and it is well worth the money. My kids have the app on their tablets as does the wife and I. Used it to sync media easily for going on a holiday and had lots of in flight entertainment as a result. Yeah, we can go about copy & pasting files etc. but emby made it really simple for my kids and wife, therefore ultimately me :)

Well, the subscription is not your only option to get the playback on your iPad. You can also just pay a one time fee of $5 and you can watch to your heart's content on your device. The iOS app has a great interface and is much better than the experience you will have with mobile Safari. But you can also use the web browser on your iPad to access your Emby server and playback for free as well.

You can do that while you contemplate an Emby Premiere subscription. The Lifetime will get you the best value available right now if you plan to use it on more devices than your iPad especially if you travel.

All good information, thanks for the responses.

@overClocked! I agree, the interface in the Emby app is excellent.

Emby has a very low cost to use/test.

I started out testing it for free using just the web app.

Then I paid for the Android TV app (I had plenty of Google Rewards $).

Once I was sure I wanted to switch to Emby, I bought a lifetime membership.

There are a couple of things that bug me still (minor), but for me, the development rate and community here were deciding factors.  Buying the lifetime membership felt more like supporting a project than simply giving the developers money.

Hi, I have a Sony Smart TV with a PS4 Pro. After struggling to make the connection to the server and figuring out it was only because I was using HTTPS instead of HTTP, now I am asked to subscribe to Emby premiere.

Now the problem is, i'm not using the app, i'm directly using the web browser and I can not play any media from my server despite me seeing them on my TV.  I even clicked the * Get premiere* button and it gives me a prompt saying * find more information on Emby premiere on the website *  but I AM already on the website/webpage on the browser. I am so confused TBH

Hi the built-in web app that comes with the server does not require pay to play, however, our Emby Theater web app for TV use does, at http://tv.emby.media

Please let us know if this helps. Thanks.

I see, yeah this helps haha. I'm gonna stop trying to fix something that is not broken now and might just end up paying for the service XD

Thanks!
