LiveTV Question

I am trying to understand how LiveTV works with Emby.

My goal is to be able to view 2 channels live for sports

If I have my Emby Server setup at my home, could I then buy a HDHomeRun and install it at my parents house who have a cable subscription?

Or does the HDHomeRun need to live at the same location as the Emby Server?

Do I then just configure my Emby Server under Live TV HDHomeRun and enter my parents IP Address ?

Where we live (Rogers) requires to use their own set top boxes to view channels, will the HDHomeRun work?

Or is the HDHomeRun only meant for the old Analog TV signals that you can pick up with just the wire?

Thank you in advance!

Pretty sure the HDHR has to be on your local network since Emby uses DLNA to find the tuner.  I could be mistaken though.

You can get a HDHR Prime, which takes a CableCard, and can then access all the same channels as a isp provided STB.  Cable providers are required to offer CableCards as an alternative to a STB, and generally cost in the $5/month range to rent.

Cablecards are a USA thing, not available in Canada

or anywhere outside of USA! I believe the hdhomeruns have to be on the same local network as Emby, they are discovered as dlna devices

That is what I am trying to understand, because in Emby when you click add HDHomeRun it asks for ip address, so I assume I could put my parents external Ip Address (Assuming I open required ports on firewalls)

Looking for someone who has setup LiveTv to help answer my questions on how it works

I have hdhomeruns setup on my test server but none remotely to assist you. I don't use them though, they are less functional than other offerings in the U.K.

Hi @@Spaceboy

What other offerings do you use in the UK?

KRS

CBers

HDHomeRun devices only work with the Freeview channels in the UK.

Sky, BT and Virginmedia all have their own STBs to access encrypted content.

Internal cards allow the streaming of multiple channels from the same mux, this goes for both dvbt and dvbs. I used to have a sky subscription and until they updated the encryption on the hd channels it was fully available through something like dvblink. I get my channels from both freesat and freeview these days. Dave isn't free on freesat [emoji4]

Also replaced dvblink with media portal now as encryption isn't needed any more

But freesat works the same as freeview and it's a better signal in London

As I understand by adding Live TV to Emby allows me to select a channel from Live TV or pick via the Guide, and the tuner will then tun in that channel.

Is there a way I can add direct streams of specific channels to emby and not allow any changing of the channels or guide?

For example:

If I have in my library:

   -Movies

   -Music

   -TV

And I want to add a Sports Category and under that have two TV channels available:

  -Sports

      -Channel 30

      -Channel 21

So these two Channels will come from my Cable, (I know I will need two tuners so both channels can be viewed at the same time)

What other hardware or software would I need in order to have these two channels available in Emby and not have the ability to change the channel?

I am thinking I would need a HDMI capture card of some kind which would take the output from my digital cable box ?

Would I install ServerWMC on a computer and somehow add these 2 channels to Emby?

I don't want to record anything from these channels, just have them play live

Any help would be great!
