subtitles for mkv files in Emby for WMC

For years now, I have been storing my movies as DVD rips and playing them just fine through Emby for WMC.  I have now, however, been looking at converting the collection to MKV to improve server performance for other Emby clients (Win 10 Emby, Emby Theater, Ember, etc.).  I burn the movies (Handbrake, VidCoder) with soft subs and all works well in other apps to toggle subtitles.

The problem is how do I toggle subtitles for MKV files in Emby for WMC.  The DVD rips, I can easily toggle using the remote right arrow and selecting the subtitles tab from the info.  But no subtitles appear for MKV files.  This also goes for MP4 files with soft subs.  I have also used both the Emby player and WMC to play files with similar results.

Am I missing something?  Is it a codec issue or WMC reconfig issue?  I ended up even installing Shark007, but that didn't help matters.  Or at least  I can't figure out the right setting.

Any help would be most appreciated.  Also, is MKV the popular container now?  I'd like something that works across all applications and hardware (WMC, Emby for WMC, Emby Theater, Ceton Echo).

Thanks in advance

Hi, mkv is a great choice but WMC has limited capabilities. All other Emby apps should not have a problem though.

So is there no way to toggle subtitles for MKV files?  WTV files work just fine....

Or....what I would like is to be able to use subs as needed in BOTH WMC AND Emby apps.  Any suggestion on how to configure files?  Or should I keep DVD rips?  If I keep DVD rips, how can I improve performance with ffmpeg and how can I use on extenders (Ceton Echo)?

I suppose I can always keep both DVD rips and MKVs...

@@Teddy how do you handle this?

There is a plugin that works great for choosing subtitles and languages not only for mkv but for avi and others.

It's called Mediacontrol and it's one of the reasons I have not switched to Windows 10 and I'm staying in W7.

Logically works with Emby WMC movies.

Update: I forgot to say that using Shark codecs you have to choose fddshow codec for mkv movies if you want Mediacontrol to work well.

You can toggle subtitles in MKVs with MCE Remote Plus. I've been using it for years now with no issues. I use it in combination with LAV Filters & DirectVobSub.

@thefever - I've been poking around with what you suggested, but am at a loss.  Is LAV Filters a codec pack sort of like Shark007?  I don't suppose you could supply some more details on how you did this...  I'm able to set whatever remote button is necessary with Harmony remotes.  I just need to know how to toggle it - what combination am I missing?

Thanks again.  I know its such a small thing, but the wife loves subs...

LAV is the guts of what you are using if you use something like Shark - without all the fat.  It is really all you should need for basic playback.

the ability to display and/ or switch subtitles in WMC/EMBY using a MKV container works just fine and is actually easier than you think.  To make sure we are on the same page, I have a couple of questions:

(1) Are you sure the MKV container has the subtitle embedded ?   If you are not sure, I would download MKVINFO and check your conversion.

(2) Are you using the "internal" or "external" player in WMC/EMBY

And bye the bye, I would uninstall shark007. As noted it's full of stuff you don't need and it really complicates the issue.  note - if possible, restore you system BEFORE the shark007 install, I have had issues, where is doesn't completely uninstall causing hours of frustration trying to figure why things were not working right.

rliepins , I do not want to struggle with different options and opinions but for 5 years I'm using WMC with a Harmony one, Sharks codecs, Mediacontrol and Win7DSFilterTweaker (to choose the apropiate codec) and perfectly control the subtitles and languages from my Harmony One without problems for mkv, avi and others..

The only problem is ffdshow must to handle all the codecs (due Mediacontrol limitation) except for the x265 HEVC which uses lav codec.

Hmmm... I believe he wanted to convert his collection to MKV..  In that case all he needs is an external player MPC-HC, which works perfectly with harmony remote and provides all the subtitle support he needs. No additional codecs, no additional plugins, no addition tweakers and not limited to ffdshow. Clean and simple.

Yes, there are different ways to handle movies, none are perfect for everyone.

In my case I researched a lot and achieved almost the perfection handling movies and I'm happy how to handle subtiitles and languages.
