Question about Dts on Xbox One

Hi there,

I'm just looking to refund my lifetime Premiere license and move off the Emby platform please.

I'm not happy with Emby performance on my platform (Server is QNAP, client is Xbox One S) and I'm not using any of the Premiere "features"

Performance issues seems to stem from the fact that none of my library of Blu-Ray rips with DTS audio play at all (black screen of death)

This is despite using the correct audio config on the Xbox (bitstream > DTS)

The biggest kick in the nuts (and acid test) was installing Plex and all my rips with DTS audio work fine without transcoding,

So, I'm out and would like my money back please as I don't have the time to troubleshoot this or convert my entire collection to AC3/AAC etc

Thanks

Sam

I am just another user.

Have you actually asked the devs to have a look at your problem and try and resolve it?

From your post count I assume not.

It would be correct to explain your issue and try and get them to sort it in the first instance by providing logs etc.

Why did you go all in with a lifetime subscription rather than try a monthly sub to see if emby did everything that you wanted?

I jumped on the lifetime as Emby/MBT has always worked for me in the past in a myriad of other deployments/platforms..

Probably an error of judgement on my part if I'm honest, but I expected that it would work without issue so I just went for it.

More of a lurker than anything on here too - haven't had the need.

The thread/s I have read on this didn't have any resolution, didn't see the value in cluttering the forum.

The DTS issue is a deal breaker for me though, and I can't see why it isn't working, have tried everything I can..

If any specific logs are required then if someone can let me know I'll provide if I can.

I'm more annoyed that Plex has worked straight off the bat which made me wonder why I've been trying to sort this when I can use something that just works..

Thanks

Sam

So you've used EMBY for a long time, just brought it for a recent setup, and that didn't work?

Why did you go for the premiere if it had worked without it, for so long in previous setups?

Funny PLEX will require a PLEX pass just to do some of the basic things EMBY does.  But if it's working, then that's already a winner for you :)

Beginning to ask myself the same question..

I don't know what features you're referring to but my use case probably doesn't require them, I just want to direct play my Blu-ray rips with the DTS audio on my Xbox One from my NAS.

Seems that Emby can't do this while Plex can.

Happy to provide any specific logs if needed.

I suspect we can get you ironed out if you give us the appropriate information but please PM me the email address to which the key was tied.  Thanks.

thanks ebr

Love to be able to get this sorted..

Bit of digging under the hood of Plex shows its actually transcoding DTS > AAC

Doing it so quickly (less than 5 seconds to start playback) I assumed it must be just playing..

Same file in Emby shows as Direct Streaming on the dashboard but red progress bar suggests transcoding, although after 5 minutes still nothing being played..

Any specific server logs apart from the attached?

Will send PM shortly

@@samwise78, there is a defect in ffmpeg 3.2 that is affecting us and causing this failure. Unfortunately this leads you to assume it is an Emby problem, and also to the point of wanting to jump ship, which is obviously really bad for us. We have submitted a patch to ffmpeg and it was accepted and merged in.

What you can do is download the static git build from here:

https://www.johnvansickle.com/ffmpeg/

It should have our fixes for this issue. Make sure to get the nightly git build from the top of the page and not the packaged 3.2.x release. Then what you can do is just unzip it, locate the ffmpeg and ffprobe executables, mark them as executable so that Emby server has privilege to run them. Then you can configure them in the Emby Server dashboard under the Transcoding menu. Let us know if this helps. Thanks.

I believe so but it is possible that the ffmpeg for qnap is compiled especially for QNAP. I will ask our QNAP contact about this.

I tried it anyway and seems to have worked ok so far, Direct Streaming is working and movie started playing within a couple of seconds.

I've only tested with one movie at the moment but looking a lot more positive.

Still seeing a few errors reported in the logs (attached) relating to Mono and DLNA..

I'm assuming there's no way that DTS audio can be played directly in my setup?

With Xbox set to Bitstream > DTS I get the remux to AC3..

Cheers

Sam

Just to confirm - i did hear back from Qnap and the static build is fully compatible, so the replacement you did is fine.

Thanks Luke - and thanks ebr for sorting the refund out so quickly.

Didn't realise the lack of a premiere key meant no Xbox app functionality, so I've switched back on a monthly payment for Premiere so I can get this working as required - will then liven up a lifetime sub..

I haven't received my key though as yet, guessing my old key won't work so I'll need to wait for a new one - any idea how long it takes - my lifetime key came through pretty quickly..

Thanks

Sam

If you used the same email, the key will be the same.  Try the Forgot Key feature in the server to have it resent.

Ok so my old key is now passing the check in Emby (yay!)

Still looking for a way to play DTS audio on the Xbox app - or confirmation it won't work..

cheers for the help all

It's possible yes. We had it enabled briefly for a release but a few users reported loss of audio, so we had to remove it. In my testing it was always perfect. We will revisit this again soon, thanks.

Thanks Luke

Sounds like a perfect fit for me - I can't be the only one who would love this functionality rather than remuxing..

After this seemed to sort out my issues I'm having problems with DTS>AC3 remuxing since update to 3.1.5

Not sure if this is a coincidence or if it's just the particular movie I'm testing with..

Remux log and server log attached below.

Thanks

What problem exactly? Everything appears normal in that log. thanks.

Completely unwatchable due to video and audio stuttering like crazy after about 15 seconds of playback..

Comparatively, the exact same file plays back fine (audio transcodes to aac) in the Plex app on the Xbox One S..

I initially thought it was something to do with the embedded PGS subs so I ripped again without any subs and the result was the same..

Thanks

Sam

Perhaps we will have to be more conservative then and convert to aac as well.

I find this confusing as (so far) it's just this specific movie - my other DTS rips are remuxing to AC3 fine..

I'm doing a conversion on the audio myself to AC3 to try and rule the remux out of the equation and will report back

Ok, so the same movie file with AC3 audio direct plays perfectly.

Noticed that while attempting to direct stream the movie with DTS audio seems that the uplink from my QNAP NAS is hard limited at 2MB/s which would explain the stuttering.

Playing the AC3 audio file peaks initially at 11MB/s and averages out around 4MB/s

Having a dig round in the QNAP config just in case..

Is there a setting in the server app that I need to change?

Or somewhere on the Xbox client app?

Thanks

Sam
