Bjorr 2
Hi, Looking for a barebone computer to act as my Emby server, I want a fast transcoding server for maybe 2-3 streams as most at one time. I am looking at the Intel NUC (nuc6i7kyk) its a bit pricey but im willing to pay if this machine is capable of running Emby smooth. http://www.intel.se/content/www/se/sv/nuc/nuc-kit-nuc6i7kyk-features-configurations.html Do you think this is a good fit for a server? anybody running a similar setup? Suggestions for other hardware? What OS do you reccomend for the box? My media is located on a NAS connected on a 1gbit LAN. Appretiate any feedback! Thank you very much. mastrmind11 717
That's pretty overkill if you only want to transcode 2-3 streams simultaneously. That NUC can technically do 9. http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=Intel+Core+i7-6770HQ+%40+2.60GHz

The ET interface is a bit laggy on my D54250WYK NUC.

Luke 36887
There must be something going on in his system because when I test on a puny Intel compute stick the interface is fast and fluid.

My emby server and theater run fine on this NUC - Skull Canyon - it is over kill but well future proofed actually i have two servers running at the same time on it with no issues other than quicksync still being a bit hit and miss but thats in beta so it will get sorted eventually I would wait a few months for the newer versions to come out to see what they are like and / or wait for the current versions to drop in price - see http://www.wegotserved.com/2017/01/03/intels-7th-generation-kaby-lake-nuc-mini-pcs-get-thunderbolt-3-intel-optane-memory-ready-support/

CharleyVarrick 276
I have latest 7th gen i3 (NUC7i3BNH) and I am thrilled by its performance, although I just use it as a htpc. Price for barebone kit was 400$cdn, memory and drive extra. It is significantly less dough than comparable standard sized boxes. Comes with a pair of front mounted microphones for Win10-Cortana usability, but I've disabled Cortana speech feature as I'm worried about privacy. speedingcheetah 39
I have a tad older Intel NUC NUC5i5RYH...and it always maxed out the dual core i5 cpu when transcoding most media back when i first started using Emby a couple years ago. Recently though, with all the updates Emby server has had....it only sometimes reaches 90's% of cpu usage when transcoding. Wish i had paid a tad more for the i7 model....but only real difference is a bump in clock speed. There is a i7 quad core model...but it only holds 2- m.2 ssds....no 2.5in support, which is a required for me as i have a 2tb 2.5in ssd to use for storage. Guest asrequested
Why buy a NUC when you can spend much more money on something much bigger? Go big or go home, right? lol

Go big or go home, right? lol Physical Size...can fit nearly anywhere...even mount to a monitor. Low power usage, saves on power bill ...my NUC uses 3watts idle, 15 under full load. (more powerful models use up to 30 watts) Average desktop 90-300watts. I ran my NUC, Prime tuner, and network switch for 2 full days off a UPS battery backup during a power outage...shows recorded fine. Try that with your "go big" system.
