Slow displaying cast

From Chocolate or another theme when I select Cast until it displays the names and photos spend around 8 seconds to appear.

This does not happen in either Web Browser or Android application so it seems to be a behavior only in Emby WMC.

If I make another click in the same movie, the cast appears immediately because I imagine it is saved in cache, but if I leave Emby WMC and go back in it takes the same 8 seconds.

I wonder if it is possible if it would be possible for that cache to be permanent or another solution even if it took up more disk space.

I am having the same issue. I have moved my emby cash to a custom location on a spin drive rather than the ssd my os is on. Would moving it back to an ssd help?

lurch9366, It's not a disk speed problem (I'm using a SDD), but Emby WMC uses its own cache for backdrops, folder and images in the Programdata directory, while the other apps use the Emby Server cache directory. I think it's just ebr could give us a solution.

The EMC image cache isn't cleared on a restart so I don't think that is what is slowing it down exactly.

ebr, I think it is best that you see what I write above with a moviescreen.

For example with the movie Zulu, the first time spends around 8 seconds to show the cast, but if I go back to the cast same movie it is shown immediately (so it is working some kind of cache).

But if I shutdown EMC and come back to enter the same movie again to spend the same 8 seconds.

I hope this will clarify

That is retrieving the cast information and loading it in memory.  Once it is in memory, it doesn't have to be retrieved again.  So, the delay you are seeing is retrieving the cast from the server.  I don't recall seeing this much of a delay, however.

Can you post the EMC log from doing that?

Luke, as said above the rest of applications do not have this issue, only EMC.

(I was wondering if changing the location where ImagesByName is, "C: \ ProgramData \ MediaBrowser-Classic \ ImagesByName" in my case, to the default directory on server would solve the problem, I think not but .....)

Here is the EMC log

In this log you are using the Breeze theme.  I have no idea what that theme is doing.  Is it still a problem in Chocolate?

ebr , Sometimes I use Breeze and Pearl but also Chocolate, in fact the movie screen sent it is from Chocolate.

Too tried with other themes and the issue is the same.

As I have backup images, if you think it necessary I can do any disruptive test as uninstall EMC and do a clean install or something else

I sent you a clean log using only Chocolate with no Breeze traces or other themes

Ebr, I've finally uninstalled EMC, deleted the entire C: \ ProgramData \ MediaBrowser-Classic directory and reinstalled again EMC.

The results are the same,(even worse) it spends around 15 seconds in populating the cast.
I send you the first log after EMC installation ...

Maybe it takes 5 seconds in fetching but until populating is around 8-10 seconds.

I still do not understand that it takes 5 seconds when the images are already downloaded on local server. (When using web, Roku or android app populating cast is almost instantaneous using the same server)

Not hardware perfomance because is an i5 working with SDD disk.
Have you any idea how to fix this ?

It is something that we can take a look at in the future but EMC was not originally designed for interacting with a server so it isn't as efficient at certain things as the other apps.

Thanks ebr.

I think we are many who follow and will continue with WMC and we will not change to Windows 10 unless a future Microsoft re-incorporates WMC.

But I think many would appreciate an update of WMC that made use of the server like the rest of applications.

Thanks Luke for the advice but that's not my case.

I always disable Windows Update, CPU consumption rarely exceeds 40%. The only problem I have with WMC is displaying the cast which apparently seems to use the server since cast is not in the cache of the MediaBrowser-Classic directory that has its own cache with the backdrops and scenes that will be immediately displayed.

Hi,

I have a similar issue. I run EMC and also have the extended length loading times for images issue. I have done a number of tests and the loading times vary between 18 & 25 seconds. I am using Chocolate theme on all HTPC's in the house, all show the same issue. All are running on SSD's with no performance\resource issues. I have tried on other themes, for instance Chocolate. It appears to load all images before it will show the display, but Subdued on the other hand will show a list with the actors names, but will only attempt to load the image when each name is selected followed by around 3 second delay per image\actor.

Emby server is running on my server, this does host a number of VM's, but they all have their own dedicated drives, network adaptors and have a very limited draw on the machines resources. I have also shut these down for testing and the loading delay is still the same times.

Having read a few of the others on the forum, I have tested the web client which does respond at the speed I would expect, was very much like MB2 speeds.

I have attached the log files from the start of Emby server, loading a few different movie casts. Hopefully this will help.

Many Thanks

Yes Luke

The cast populating is very slow even in version 3.2.1.0, and does not depend on the theme used,

I imagine it is due that the application was designed for Mediabroser 2 and does not benefit from the advantages of Emby 3.

I also use the Roku and Android app and speed in all respects is abysmal comparing it with Emby WMC. (Sometimes I dream of a new design by Emby WMC or even an api from Emby Theater for WMC but I guess it's just in my dreams).
Thanks for worrying about this, Luke.

I loaded MB2 with the NEO theme last night for testing, after the cast images are downloaded. They cache and are instantly available. I do very much like Emby, but the speed difference between MB2 and Emby is pretty dramatic.

@nairnmoster, I would suggest checking out our new app, Emby Theater. It is built from the group up for Emby and is designed to fully replace WMC. You can learn more here:

Thanks !

Yeah, I've given it a shot and very much liked it. It's pace was what I was hoping for in EMC. However, I use WMC to watch TV and having the ability to use my MCE remote is kind of essential. I know going between a remote and a K&M isn't a big deal. But it's not the setup I want.

I guess I will either have to go back to MB2/MCM or just accept the delayed performance issues of EMC.
