New Feature Request for HD Homerun Extend

We already do that internally, automatically. When an Emby app requests a live tv stream of certain quality, the server will use the HD Homerun stream that is closest to what was requested.

Here is my issue, I want to restrict recordings to 30fps I don't want native or 60fps so currently if I understand this correctly it's done internally no way to set it.

From what I have been able to see if the recording is done at 30fps it's progressive and plays smoothly on the nvidia shield. If the recording is native then more times then not it's interlaced and then Emby client doesn't deinterlace the video. If it's at 60 fps then the nvidia shield has trouble playing it back.

Unless you have the transcode profile set to none - in which case Emby will software transcode everything, correct?

I think what the OP was after was being able to have a setting that directly addressed the hardware transcode configuration in the HDHR firmware.

I think the automatic method is great - but I can see the OPs confusion because there is no way to tell what is happening.  I was under the impression that Emby looked to the user setting in the SD firmware to get the default stream codec - and then if a different codec was required, the server would transcode where needed.

You are saying that with the automatic method - regardless of what the user has set as the default stream quality in the HDHR device firmware - you are overriding this as needed for a given player?  That I think is great.  It is nice to have the user not have to configure every little thing.

The issue (from my perspective at least) is on the recording side.  Here you just obey whatever the firmware setting is and record.  This is where it might be nice to have a setting in the tuner settings to control the default codec.  That way if people want to record to h.264 they can without having to mess with the HDHR web settings.

That is where it gets confusing to users I think - if you are using a playback device that supports h.264/ac3 but not MPEG-2/ac3 and they see it direct playing for the Live TV and transcoding recordings.

FWIW:

Some might be saying why don't you just set the firmware to h.264 and leave it to have everything be h.264.

I did this for a while on my EXTEND - and I noticed that after a while it would overheat and there would be issues with the stream cutting in and out.  I have the fan based EXTEND - so those with the newer passive case might be better.  I also use a CONNECT which catches the overflow when more than 2 streams are required.

Because of this I have stuck to MPEG-2 for everything and made sure my hardware could direct play.

Yes in my testing the transcoding on the HDHR causes the little box to get very loud and hot when it's active.

Just to throw in my experience. I have the new Extend model without the fan (they will upgrade your older Extend model for a modest price). I keep it on the higher setting and I haven't seen any issues. It sits on my cabinet by the TV and other player devices. Since there is no fan you don't hear anything from it.  I like it because Emby will record the stream in h264 without putting any pressure on my CPU while it's recording.

However, that being said, I also have a Prime unit that I have Emby recording from and keeping native Audio and Video stream but remuxing on the fly to the mkv format. I use the Nvidia Shield as my playback device both in the Living Room and Bedroom. It always direct plays from the Emby app just fine with that setting. I could even change the setting for the Extend unit so that Emby records it the same way as the Prime but I haven't played around with that yet.

Anyway, just thought I would chime in with that experience.
