Emby app for FireTV and Fire Stick does not always load.

I have both a FireTV and a Fire Stick that both suffer from the same issues.  If they they go unused for an undetermined amount of time I am met with a blank gray screen and it never loads the app.  I am forced to go in to Settings/Applications/Manage Installed Apps and force stop then launch it again.  Most times I have to log in again too.  I have it set to log out after 24 hours but I would prefer it to never log out but I don't see an option for that.

Am I missing something?

Thanks in advance.

Can you please check the version number for your app in the settings screen?  If you are on 1.2.77 then have you seen this happen in the past day or so?

I'm a little confused, if I go into settings/ applications/manage installed applications my Emby shows that it's version 1.2.69a but if I go to apps from the side menu and choose Emby then look at More Info the version from there shows 1.2.77a

I think that means (though I might be wrong, I usually am) that you're on / using version 69a but 77a is available for you to update too.

Looks like you were right. I removed the previous one from the recent list and launched this one from the App drawer and now it seems to be running the 1.2.77a

Hope 77a fixes things for you, will just have to see what develops I guess. ebr would obviously know much more about such things than I would, he being a developer and all.

I can't resist suggesting, however, that you check that your FTV and Fire Stick don't have the same IP address, as I had that problem with two FTV's, and it stopped one from even finding the server most of the time. Apologies to ebr for mentioning this, as I just found out about it and I'm probably going to suggest it as a solution to every FTV problem in the known universe  :)

  • 2 months later...

I have this same problem, using the current version of Emby (v. 1.3.15a) on my Fire TV 2 (v. 5.2.4.0) with the latest Fire OS.  It doesn't happen right away:  usually I'll be watching something at night, and the next day, when I launch the app, I just get a grey screen.  I then have to go into manage installed applications and force stop Emby, after which it fires right up (no pun intended).  My server version is 3.1.2.0.

Any idea what might be going on?

I noticed after updating to the latest version it only worked for a few weeks now it's back to freezing again after it sits for sometime.

Somebody else has to be suffering from this too.

Can you tell me exactly what you do the night before when you are finished watching whatever you were?

I will try to figure it all out but it will take a few days since not only am I not the only using the FireTV but we use it for a variety of uses, Emby app, Kodi (with emby add-on) Netflix and Amazon Prime videos. So to know exactly what was used last and by who may be difficult.

Does your Emby server go to sleep or get turned off at night?

Interesting that should ask that, after I updated when I first had this issue it was working fine.  But then after a month or so I was noticing it acting up again.  This is in my new home using a new ISP and I noticed lately I get random internet disconnects sometimes more than once a day.  It's annoying to say the least.  I am not sure if its my router starting to fail or if it's my IPS (Xfinity, previously Uverse which is not available when I live now).  The server running Emby never gets turned off other than an occasional maintenance reboot by me.

Would these disconnects cause Emby app on the FireTV to act this way?

I'm not sure but it is something for us to investigate.  Unfortunately, no matter what I have tried, I have not been able to reproduce this so something like what you describe could be the culprit.  Thanks.

Thanks.

I will continue to investigate further.

For me, my server is set to be up 24/7:

My drive (an SSD) is set to turn off after 20 minutes.  Perhaps that might be the problem?

As for what I do at night, I usually exit out of the media I am watching, and then exit out of the app to the Fire TV by clicking on the home button.  Last night, I did the same, waited about ten minutes or so, and went back in, but it behaved normally.

I suspect that the Fire TV might be doing some resource conservation in the background, and not completely killing the app, but doing something to interfere with it--perhaps removing its access to the network or something?  I'm afraid I do not know enough about the inner workings of Android to know where to start to ascertain if this is, in fact, the case, or if something else is happening.

This sounds very familiar to what I do.

Okay, it may be the "exiting" the app via the home button that could a contributing factor here - because that doesn't actually exit the app at all.  It just pushes it back on the stack and goes home.

We obviously need to make the app work okay in that instance but it may be helpful if you guys tried not hitting home before turning off.  You don't need to back out of the app or anything, just shut down with Emby still up.  Just to see if the problem happens to go away.  Thanks.

I'm sorry, could you elaborate more on the shutting the app down? Keep in mind my wife uses this firetv when she comes home from work and I'm long gone and she's not very technology savvy so to try and get her to close out of emby properly may be difficult.

i use back button to get to firetv home screen and dont have any of these problems, but i also click on user name to logon everytime also.

Dont know if this helps anyone.

UNRELATED......If you get audio, no video in a show/movie thru emby, RE-ENCODE. Something doesnt like that video, i just went thru this yesterday with 2 tv series.

I can't even get to a login screen though. Emby opens up and it just sits there at a blank grey screen and I have to go into settings/manage applications and force stop then relaunch it. Edited by tjlmbklr

back button to amazon home screen, log back in and wait 30 seconds to load.

You're dealing with software, apps and networks, I'd be surprised if things always worked in a split second.

You don't have to shut Emby down.  Just don't hit the "home" button.  If it is too much trouble don't worry about it.  This gives me another thing to try to reproduce the issue.  I never use the home button so maybe that is it.

OK, we'll try this for a while to see if it helps.

One possibility:  I have the Emby app set to not require a login, but I seem to recall noticing that there is also a setting to automatically log off after 24 hours.  Perhaps there is some sort of conflict between these two settings?  I'll see if I can test it by leaving it open for more than 24 hours to see if that is what is causing it.
