Horrybly Slow... and Android App cannot playback

Hi I have Emby running on an Asusstor AS-304T (just migrated 1.5TB of SD movies/TV series that were in an emby server on a windows machine.) Its a small collection - 230 movies, maybe 20 series.

Unfortunately, Everything that queries the server runs like molasses...

Web access to browse the library takes 10 seconds just to show the suggestions page with NO suggenstions and 3 of my recently played movies.

Clicking on 'movies' getting out of the suggestions page takes 40 seconds to display the list of 1-100 of 230 movies! Then it takes an additional 2-3 seconds for the images to load.

Looking at this in the Android app, or Tizen TV app is similarly incomprehensibly slow....

*I highly doubt this is a processing power problem - as I have monitored the performance of the NAS - and here is no meaningful network activity, top says the mono process is taking up 1-20% of one (of four) processors... and top is the next heaviest load on the processors!  and there appears to be ram to spare..

It sort of feels like something is timing out (long delay, no processing power) and is then failing and then continuing to generate file lists.. and that these lists are being cashed - because sometimes subsequent visits to the movies page are instantaneous - (eg: after a minute of waiting painfully for all 3 pages of movies to load - I can page forward/backward without any delays.)

Same thing happens for TV series - I have to wait for the lists - but browsing to a specific series is fast, then going back/forth to a pregenerated list is fast....

I also notice that, while the whole thing is completely unusable - when I have tried to wait to eventually navigate and play videos:

1. None of the series show any SEASONS

2. None of the videos play in Emby Android/Tizen apps. (Bank screen)

I have resorted to using Emby for Kodi, which at least sync's the database and provides a fast interface - but I would really prefer to just use Emby! I'm a lifetime supported because I loved the apps...

NB: I can play all videos in Kodi, and see seasons!

Any advice on troubleshooting this problem would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

X

Hi again,

I did not zip up my entire log file as it was massive with many of the DLNA errors... this is why I fished out the pertinent bits - thinking I could save some time for whomever can help me look into the issue...

If this was a mistake (for example if you have some automated log processor) please just let me know and I will happily upload the entire thing.

Didn't want to hold up the assistance because of a faux pas with the log files 8)

Do you mind posting the whole thing and also removing plugins and seeing if the issue persists with just the core server? Thanks.

Hi Again Luke.

OK Sure! Thanks again for your effort to help me get to the bottom of this.

I removed all plugins

I disabled DLNA

I rebooted Emby and the nas.

I then proceeded to look at the library (movies, TV)

As before - first attempt to get anything takes ages.

First view of a TV season takes a long time to list the seasons.

Subsequent views are lightning fast - but waiting 1-15 seconds between clicks makes anything using emby (TV, Android App) completely unusable - the only so-so workaround is the Kodi library sync.

Thanks!

Any thoughts or advice?

Emby is useless as it is functioning now... its just to slow to use for anything

Sad thing is after supporting emby (lifetime), I tried to convince myself it was a configuration issue with the NAS, or something that happens to all media servers when I throw a couple of hundred movies at them - so I tried installing plex an running plex off the Samsung Tizen TV - silky smooth experience :(  very disheartening that the other guys could make this work out of the box.

Anyway - So its not an issue of the files in the libraries, the speed of the NAS, communication with TV or the TV app itself.

Any chance someone can advise me on getting emby to work comparably without 7-15 second wait times between actions?

Are you using a remote client outside of your LAN?

Everything is going over the net via dynamic dns.

Thanks for the replies.

The dynamic DNS was a good catch but appears not to be an issue - as the dns requests are cached and don't go outside of the router - I tried NSlookup times from different machines behind the router and all are 1-2ms.    Definitely not contributing to a 15 second response time from Emby server!  Besides - the TV box client requests internally are all using IPs and still see the same delayed responses to requests.  The logs I submitted were sent by using the web client from off-site - but the experience is the same on-site with the android set-top box.

I looked into updating the server version on the AsusStor NAS - but the Asus App Central package claimed to be up-to-date (ie they had not updated their app store package)- and I discovered from other people on the forum that Asus do strange things with their permissions and than manual updates are non-trivial. So I have given up on this - with sense of frustration at my support of the project.

After wasting a great deal of time on this nonsense I am setting up a windows PC to run emby server - will feed back if that runs faster.

BUT: I thought I would provide some feedback as a currently less-than-satisfied lifetime contributor:

PLEASE dont advertise things that dont work!

eg: AsusStor support - yes, you can install something - but it is not functional! And other forum members and supporters are also complaining about this!

I bought the AsusStor AFTER checking Emby would work and seeing it first in the list on the page https://emby.media/nas-server.html

I would have MUCH PREFERRED big warnings to tell me not to bother - than something saying it is supported only to find that the platform is not supported and has known issues!

I also find it frustrating in the beta Tizen app thread 'announces' compatibility only to then have to claim that the non-functional US-only tizen app in the app store (that cannot play anything for me - and others as evidenced my multiple forum posters) and that a new one that can play anything we like is 'ready' but is pending Samsung's process...   IF it is released and functional, promote it as such... if not, have some consideration for your users who use this information to invest their own time to try to mess with their configurations to try to make it work.

I say this because I tried the tizen plex app and it just worked. Plex on the Asusstor just worked....   So if they can do it, its not Samsung's fault (as alluded to in the Tizen thread) or Asus' fault (as alluded to on negative Asustor threads).    And rather than match their advertising I'd rather just know what really works :(     I'm still trying to get the home theatre app I like the best to work - Emby was great because it was open, and had good support for live tv - but lately my opinions are changing

  • Solution

To close this thread:

Installing emby on a windows device (with everything else being the same) solved the delay issues. For the emby was unusable on a reasonably spec'd modern AsusStor device.

I'd be interested to hear if anyone has a success story with Asus NAS and in the meantime, recommend the website be updated to provide a warning to those expecting a windows emby server experience with the current AsusStor distributions.
