I'm looking to add live TV to my setup and after weeks of web searching many options I see a lot of people using the HDHomeRun. In my limited understanding it seems like that costs more per tuner than many other options. I've already ordered the Hauppauge Quad and it was like $99. So, since everyone isn't doing the same "$25/tuner" math I am, why so many HDHomeRuns? Does it have some advantages I didn't consider? Is it the appliance nature that makes it easy? They have been in business for many years and have a pretty solid product. They are also developing their own DVR software. All the controls are native, and Luke is doing a fabulous job with the DVR functionality. At this point, I'd like to say that I am loving all the new developments. My wife will not tolerate much of the tinkering I'm willing to put up with. I'm aiming for "as easy at the cable company DVR". Thanks for the info. For example you don't see haupage offering a emby plugin while HDHomerun worked with them to develop Live TV. A big bonus of the HDHomerun is not having to worry about the TV guide. I personally haven't gone with a the home run as I wanted an internal solution that provides 4 tuners. I don't like the ideas of 2 additional boxes, plugs, cables antenna cables. WIfe approval factor (WAF) played a big role in my decisions. As to regretting your decision and getting the WAF make sure whatever setup you go for is tested and running before switching. My setup is a quadtuner, Mediaportal tv server, emby media server and kodi frontend. To my knowledge it was only ceton who had the option and I don't think anyone has heard much from them? I believe that was WMC early so once WMC died off....... I run 2 Prime tuners for a total of 6 live channels at a time. I've not run into any issues every with the tuners. Playback via my Nvidia Shields is great. The pricing is what got me to back off, and Hauppauge is a brand I've had before and was always good so I went with the Hauppauge card. I didn't want any USB dongles so internal was nice, though hanging a device or two off my network doesn't bother me, I've read people put the HDHR in their attic by their antenna and just run an Ethernet cable to my router. I was on the fence, and being "only" $100 if I have to jump the the HDHR I can surely eBay this thing and make my losses minimal on an upgrade. I'll wait for the Hauppauge to show up first, I'm new at this so not really sure what I'm going to run into. I will say, we'll find out if I'll shop at Dell in the future. Dell was the only place that said they had the WinTV-QUAD in stock. I even called to make sure it wasn't backordered (both HDHR and the WinTV-QUAD were hard to find in stock). I ordered the 4-tuner Hauppauge from Dell because they said it was in stock and would ship. It was supposed to be delivered today but no go. I called, and they said it's backordered. I even called up to verify as it's hard to find any of these (or HDHomeRuns!) in stock. So, I cancelled and am back to square one and rethinking the HDHR. Can someone explain why I don't need the H.264 of the HDHR.Extend? I'm all about conserving space and being that this model automatically compresses that seems perfect. However, the .Extend model isn't available now and is $50 more (or $100 if I buy 2). Can I have Emby automatically compress the HDHR.Connect data? The connect is available now and is cheaper with the only difference I can tell being that it does not have the built in compression. Am I reading that right? I see in the config for Live TV the option to automatically convert to .mpg or .mkv "on the fly". This is a premium option but that's okay if I can get this all working I'll gladly bone up! You really only need the Extend 1. if your playback device does not handle MPEG-2 decoding natively and (if it does not) 2. you don't want the added transcoding overhead constantly stressing your server. Can I have Emby automatically compress the HDHR.Connect data? Not on the fly. For recordings you can have the MPEG-2 .TS converted after the recording is complete to h.264 in an MKV or MP4 container. Most of them don't support mpeg-2 (the native format of most TV streams - in the US anyway) so that has to be converted to something they do support (h.264). Either model will work but the more expensive one can do this conversion on the tuner device itself. The less expensive one will just have to rely on the Emby server to do it - but not in every case. Guest Diefenthal Posted September 29, 2016 Share Posted September 29, 2016 had the octopus net v1 from DigitalDevices since 2013 at this time was only DVBS supported since 2014 is the DVBT Support and an custom DVBC Solution added last jear had SES added the DVBC Support offical to their specs what can emby at time is not really much Discovery is inbuild RTSP tells the Server what he should tune (Communication) is inbuild too some Lists added for DVBS (Satellite Tuning Informations) is added too but the receiving of RTP (MPEG2TS) and RTCP (Get Informations if packets lost or recieption Details ) isnt inbuild sure some classes are added to emby for RTP RTCP but the complete code for parsing of the Transportstream Data ( MPEG2TS) is currently under construction (spareTime limitation is there main problem) if anyone would there help is he / her very welcome the BroadcastType DVBS is that what i can receive if anyone would there help with an other one can i customize the sample for that but he / her should had Lists .ini with the Broadcast Tuning Informations Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I ordered one. Since their price is higher I'm inclined to see if I can get away with two tuners and save $180. Thanks for all the input, I'm trying to do this right the first time! Sport and news mainly. Also when I get home from work, my wife and I watch Family Feud and The Project while we cook and have dinner.
