Be Careful of Anniversary Update (I Lost Drives)

Hey Guys,

Hope you don't have to experience what I have with the 1607 anniversary Windows 10 update.

If you have multiple drives for your media I would not recommend updating.

I performed a clean install of Windows 10 1607 which was downloaded from Microsoft and made ready with Rufus. All good until I had installed all of my programmes and music production libraries which took me three days to complete.

I started to lose contents of the folders on my D drive so I would reboot and Windows would not recognise the hard drive. If I shutdown the PC and switched it off from the pSU and drained down power and fire it up again it would work. I kept getting this happen and repeat the process until it not only got worse but another drive would disappear too.

In the end I switched around drives and disconnected drives to no avail. I have a power controller feeding all of my drives so that I can switch drives off because they are just for backup purposes. I disconnected this and refed the drives from the PSU and no change.

My last option was to plug the C Drive into the slots that the other Drives had been in and disappeared and it never failed once. I knew then that it was a WIndows 10 1607 issue. Microsoft had released an update but if I am correct this was to correct Windows moving files or folders around in the C Drive.

So I spent all of last weekend performing a clean install of Windows 10 1511 and guess what? No issues whatsoever with this version.

Oh and I actually performed two clean installs of 1607 before reverting back to 1511.

Just a word of caution

I noticed it changed network sharing settings on my systems as well. Nonetheless, it is still a nice update and I would suggest pushing through it and figuring it out rather than reverting.

Same here. Had to go into network sharing settings and turn back on sharing permissions after update. Also had to re-install WMC add-on. Anniversary update wiped it clean.

I don't think that mine is quite the same as the issues reported in the link. I scanned through the posts and it looks like the majority of issues were that people were asked to format the raw drives. I did not have that issue. My drives would show up and work for a short while and then the content of the folders would disappear. I would reboot and the drive would not show up until I powered down and discharged the PSU. But it would replicate again and it got more frequent until I had two drives disappearing.

I have not seen any posts from Microsoft purporting that they have covered everything yet.

I will message the employee on Reddit and see what he says.

I have installed all of my programmes now and made a backup with Active Disk Image just in case I do update and have any issues.

I guess Windows 10 means we are the guinea pigs for their operating system now. I don't like the forced updates after 1607 too.

I am a long standing loyal supporter of Windows but not sure that I like the direction it is going in now. It is a shame that Macs are too expensive and you can't custom build. :(

Ah well, I did have the raw thing on one drive, so just thought I'd mention it as it does seem to be an Anniversary thing for you, thought not as you say the same.

Read somewhere they're introducing Anniversary over 3 months to try and reduce this kind of thing, but it obviously still happens.

I did lose two drives, one had a backup so I just reformatted and moved on. Until I read this I assumed it was just a bad drive.  Sad to know Microsoft was the culprit all along. This is a first for me ! I read an article by a former Microsoft employee in it he stated that Microsoft's update release schedule is hard line, that is weather the update release is ready or not it gets pushed out and they will try to catch up with it at a later date. However they don't always meet that goal and sometimes it is completely pushed to the side to keep on schedule. I am sorry I upgraded to the Anniversary update so quickly, for the next one I will wait until the "all clear" flags are waived !

It is a shame that you formatted your drive because the information was still on it.

Problem with waiting though is Microsoft are starting to control the updates and stopping us having a choice when we update which I think is not right at all.

It is a shame. I installed the Anniversary update shortly after it was released and I didn't see any reports like the one in this post. I figured the drive was old and it was it's time to go but now I realize that was probably not the case. I never could have imagined that a Windows update could wreak so much havoc on someones system. They are not as professional as they used to be. The new corporate mentality in 2016 is to "roll it out and move on" well finish it later. Its sad to see IMO
