Movies not Getting Added to Collections

Hello everyone!

I have a persistent problem with emby Collections that I just can't find an answer for. Any input would be appreciated...

I have a large movie collection stored on a Synology NAS. My emby server is a Windows 10 tower. I'm running the latest emby server (auto update).

I have about 100 Movie Collections that I have manually set up in emby. I have another 15-20 collections that I want to set up, but won't cooperate. Several odd things are happening...

  1. Multi-Select doesn't seem to work at all for this purpose (on ANY collection). When I multi-select the 4 or five movies that I want included in the collection, then hover over one of them and right-click and select "add to collection", it appears to work fine. However, when I then go to "Collections" and open that specific collection, it only has one movie in it - the one that I was hovering over when I right-clicked and chose "add to collection".  The others simply aren't in there.  ???  I end up having to add one movie at a time to the collection....
  2. Some movies are not showing up properly in the collection.  Let me explain...I'll use the Exorcist collection as an example.  When I add the movies, one at a time to the "Exorcist" collection, all seems to work fine.  However, when I go to "Collections" and look at Exorcist collection, it shows three of the movies as "Movies" (Exorcist 2, 3, and 4) and one of them as an "Other Item" (Exorcist 1). When I open and view the details of any of the 3 that are shown as "Movies", the info (metadata) looks perfect - meaning it is exactly the same metadata that I meticulously put into the movie via the Metadata Manager". However, when I look at the movie that the collection shows as an "Other Item", it has a completely different set of metadata from which I put into the movie. It has different images, genres, people, keywords, etc...across the board it is different metadata than the movie that I had set up in the Metadata Manager.
    • Then, when I open the Metadata Manager and look at the Exorcist movies, it shows the Exorcist collection with all 4 movies under it (3 with correct metadata, and one with different and incomplete metadata)
    • Interestingly, the one movie title that shows up with weird metadata (Exorcist 1 in this example), ALSO shows up as a "Movie" - separate from the collection.  In other words, there are now two entries in the Metadata Manager for Exorcist 1 - one under the Exorcist collection heading, and a second one simply shown as a movie.  the one shown as a movie has perfect metadata that I had originally put in myself.

As previously mentioned, I have another 15 or 20 sets of movies that I would like to set up as collections, but I can't because most or all of the movies show up as "Other Items" when I try to add them to collections and have screwed up metadata associated with them. Usually it happens to all of the movies in that set, but not always. For example, all three movies in the "Hills Have Eyes" collection show up as "Other Items". Other sets behave like the Exorcist set where most of them show up as "Movies" and one or two show up as "Other Items".

I have looked at the file structures of the movies involved and they look perfectly consistent with every other movie in my collection.  I use Genre folders (Horror, Comedy, Action, etc...) under which I have individual movie folders such as "Exorcist 1", "Exorcist 2" etc... In each of these movie folders, I store the images and other metadata in the same folder as the movie.

Further, I have had no issues with emby finding these movies with library scans. The movies in question look and act like every other movie. I can see them in the "Movies" folder.  I can see and edit their metadata in the Metadata Manager. They show up properly in reports.  In other words, I cannot find any evidence that these movies aren't set up properly in the file structures in which they live.

I can provide screen shots of everything I am describing if that would help anyone understand the issue better.

Thanks in advance to anyone that may be able to shed some light on this strange behavior. I am out of ideas...

I just tested bulk adding of movies to a collection, both a new collection and existing one, and in both cases, no problem found.

Thanks Luke for the prompt reply.

I just tried multi-selecting movies and adding them to collections again myself and it failed in exactly the same way.  ??? So strange...

This multi-select issue is no big deal to me anyway.  I don't mind adding the movies to collections one at a time. It was just an observation since I tried it and it didn't work.

Maybe if you posted a log someone maybe be able to see why it failed.

Not to sound harsh, but this brings nothing to the table. Obviously something is wrong on the user's end and no suggestion to get to some sort of resolution.

We tried to help MarcusJ in the Kodi forums, even if it's not an Emby add-on issue. The real issue is the fact that some of his titles are not treated as movies, inside collections. This is the problem. How can he get to the bottom of this? He mentions duplicate in the metadata manager - One that is a Movie, the other is "Other Items" - why would this happen if said Movie is part of a "Movie" library.

Skimming over the other topic is this an issue with the genre nested movie folder format?

Following Happy2Play's suggestion: How exactly is your movie library setup in Emby.

/Movies <---- Did you add this folder as your Movie library?
/Genre1 <---- or Did you add each genre folder as a Movie library?
        /Movie (year)/Movie.ext
    /Genre2
       /Movie (year)/Movie.ext

Yes you did. I am sorry, I do not mean to come across as harsh. Why not ask for screenshots then... He did provide his movie structure.

Could the issue also be which folder he added as Movie library in Emby? The server doesn't truly support nested folders, is this right? It expects the library folder to point to the folder directly containing the movie library. I am asking because I've wondered myself. :)

Good day,

I remember I report about this from some months ago, and Luke fix the issue, as the problem was:

Selecting more than 3 titles, it will add one titles when creating the boxset.

Last night I selected 3 titles and it was fine, I will do more test by selecting more titles as a test..

Regarding some naming casing the issue, can we have example of some of these names?

I do appreciate all of your help. I'm not nearly as technical as any of you, so I apologize for my lengthy descriptions. I don't really know what is relevant to you and what is not.

Regarding the library structures. I list each genre folder separately in the "Library" section of the emby server dashboard. I am attaching a screen shot of that setup.

I'm also attaching Windows Explorer screen shots of the actual folders for a couple of the movies in question. One shows the folder structure for "Exorcist 1" and a separate screen shot shows the folder structure for Exorcist 2. The "Collection" function within the emby server treats "Exorcist 2" perfectly, and treats "Exorcist 1" as an "Other Item" and handles the metadata strangely.

I'm also attaching screen shots from within the Metadata Manager showing the treatment of metadata for the movies.  I hope this helps.

Thanks again.

Since you set the libraries by genre you are good.  To me it looks like "The Exercist" is not identified.  Hard to see in that screenshot but there are no external ids listed correct?

I'm sorry about the size of the screen shots.

I think you're seeing what I'm seeing now. The metadata for the actual movie - Exorcist 1 looks perfect in the Metadata Manager. But when you look at the metadata for the rogue ("Other Item") version of the movie, it is very incomplete - no external id's, no overview, no genres, and only 1 generic image (Warner Brothers???)

Okay, now look at the path for both.  In the screenshot it doesn't look correct but it is hard to see, it looks like it points to a totally different path.

This is sort of a grey area but doesn't hurt Movies as much as it does TV.   I have my movies in 27 folders #, A-Z on one server and my library points to \Movies and don't have an issue.

Good day,

Sorry to ask, but why you still keeping the folder rip of the dvd "audio_ts"? I run with problem with it one day, but this not related to your problem.

I have the same boxset for the The Exorcist collection, and the original one all fine here.

Abobader, I'm not sure I understand your question. When I rip DVDs, two folders are typically generated - VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS.  Sometimes only a VIDEO_TS folder is generated.  I admit that I don't understand what these folders' purposes are or why you would need one or both of them.  Are the AUDIO_TS folders not needed? Can you elaborate?

Good thought, but the paths are identical. I just checked.

The screenshot posted above looks like it points to "......\The"

Good day,

Yes, only video_ts is need it, when riip application normally generated the audio_ts, you can go a head and deleted.

Good to know.  Thank you!

Perhaps this (audio_ts) is where the duplicate comes from? Because if it's inside and also outside of the collection folder - it must mean it is in fact a duplicate Movie Emby is seeing.

The paths are identical.  I'm attaching better screen shots of the paths for the two metadata sets...

Okay but get it from Collection view not Metadata Manager .
