Intel Compute Stick

Now that I've centralized my DVR functionality to a VM running Emby, I'm toying with the idea of replacing my big bulky Media Center PC. One thought I had was to replace it with one of these Intel Compute Sticks.

I'm wondering if anyone has run Emby theater off either the Windows or Ubuntu versions of these sticks? I'm thinking of using one of these sticks for running Emby Theater and the Steam client for in-home streaming.

I have tested it (although not lately), and it runs smooth. It's been a couple months since i've tried it but it shouldn't be any different now.

Excellent, now I just need to confirm how it works for Steam In-Home Streaming.

*According to some threads on the Steam community pages the Intel Compute Stick works fine as a in-home streaming client so it's looking good.

I had the same idea about using Compute stick.

Have you guys tested using the atom powered stick or the more recent m3 powered stick (more expensive, but more power and ram)?

Also, have you guys been using Emby Theater or web browser?

I did not have such luck running emby theater as a client on this device, see: https://emby.media/community/index.php?/topic/50444-client-hardware-cable-box-replacement/page-1

If you are talking about running it as a server, then maybe?  But I can't imagine it would play video well.

Can you elaborate which stick you have tried? The m3 CPU version stick seems fairly new, and at least as capable as the old m3-330 which my parents have in their win7 MC box. (which works nicely with the Emby web client).

Maybe I need to get a good one and re-review it.  I'm not entirely sure what model I was testing with, it was a friends stick.

THAT could be interesting!  :)

Please post your findings. the m3 stick is not exactly cheap, but I think it's incredible performance for the size. If I recall correcly, it has something with C325 or CS325 in its name.

Humm..  Yea I think the one i tested was the Atom processor, i recall it was a quad core..  Maybe the one for $338.00 bucks will work well?   https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/products/boards-kits/compute-stick.html    But for that price, I could get a Shield...  And for the price of the M5 version I could get annother alienware alpha (my favorite emby theater box)  lol..     Maybe ill check ebay first...

Disregarding the price (I wouldn't have many TVs to feed), is the Shield a stable platform? I recalled someone having issues in a thread, but maybe that's been addressed?

I wan't aware of an m5 powered stick!? wicked!

The sticks (and possibly the shield?) are interesting for low power consumpion. I have an old PC I can use, but it's power hungry.

You guys were asking what version of the stick I tested (and it sucked), I had my friend send me a pic of the unit I borrowed for testing and it was the: STK1AW32SC

I just tried to compare. The "new" 325 based PC stick seems about 2-3 more powerful in CPU, and vastly better GPU than the 32SC stick (picture above).

None of the Atoms / intel J chips can seem to keep up with the 325 stick.

It's not cheap, but I think it might be more versatile than an Nvidia shield. I wish someone could test it with Emby client. :)

Which intel model number is the "325" you are talking about?  On this page: https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/products/boards-kits/compute-stick.html

Has anyone tried this kind of box? (sorry, I don't know how I change the font... it's grayed out)

Yea, stay away from the off brand android boxes, they don't run real android TV and all of the ones with a similar processor are all using the same motherboard,  see my original post, i also reviewed one..  lol   The MiBox was the best "cheap" android tv device i could find.
