Kodi crashes when playing from home screen widgets (Movies/TV Shows) on iOS devices

This is a duplicate issue in another forum post, but nobody has been posting anything in that thread: http://emby.media/community/index.php?/topic/32876-kodi-crashes-when-playing-from-home-screen-widgets/

Basically, when trying to view a Movie or TV show from a home screen widget, such as Movies, or TV Shows, Kodi crashes immediately. However, if I go into the Movies or TV Shows menu, I can play content just fine from the Emby back end. This only seems to happen on the home screen, and it does not matter what Skin is being used. I've experienced this with Kodi 17, 16.1, and 16. Kodi 15.2 does not seem to have this problem.

This will happen consistently on both tvOS and iOS devices. I've sideloaded Kodi on several iPhone 6/6 Plus and Apple TV 4's, and all display the same behavior. I've attached my logs just in case they may be helpful in any way.

I don't believe the issue comes from the add-on. It crashes after the add-on did it's part of providing the path to the file to Kodi. You could try using native playback mode (in the add-on configs > sync options, you'll need to reset your database afterward) Maybe it'll help...?

Did you capture in log, playback from library to see if there's any difference?

In response to using native mode, I'd like to avoid that as "add-on" is worlds better, and it allows me to take the device with me as I have the option "Play from HTTP instead of SMB" turned on in order to access my library remotely.

I've posted the logs again. In this example, I was able to play a movie from the library, exit, and then amazingly play a movie from the "Movies" home screen widget. I forgot to mention this originally because it's so exceedingly rare it maybe only happens 1 in every 30 to 40 attempts. The third movie I tried to play from the "Movies" home screen widget did crash though. I loaded up Kodi again and then grabbed the logs.

I get the same issue not on iOS, but on OS X. It doesn't happen as frequently as every time but maybe every one in three. Never a problem using the menu, just the widget. It has happened on clean installs of Kodi and the OS as well as two different skins, Titan and Zephyr.

I can post a log if you like but I don't want to derail this thread, just wanted to let you know it may not be an iOS issue but a Kodi issue.

That's interesting. Are you saying that it only happens on your Mac and not your iOS devices, or just that you're not using any? And if you are, what device(s) are you using, and are you on the latest firmware? Is it limited to only Titan and Zephyr, or does it seem to happen regardless of the skin used? I'm assuming that you're using version 16.1 of Kodi? I think that posting your logs will not only help to validate my experience, but it also can help the devs track down the possible issue. Regardless, thanks for sharing as I was wondering if anyone else out there was experiencing something similar.

Also, you bring up a good point about it possibly being a Kodi issue, but would the Kodi developers go out of their way to address an issue with an add-on that is not from their official repo?

I am not using any iOS device, just OS X, which is version 10.11.4 and up until the last day was the current version. Kodi is version 16.1 but it has happened on all versions of 16, I have no experience with older versions of Kodi as I'm new to Kodi and Emby.

I've only tried the two skins mentioned, currently running Titan which I changed to because of this widget issue. The problem also occurred on OS X 10.10, so I did a clean install of 10.11 to try and fix this problem. I've also tried clean installs of Kodi three times. The only thing I haven't tried reinstalling is Emby. Emby is running on unRaid and is rock solid, I'm currently on version 3.0.5934.0 but it has happened on earlier versions of the server and I've also tried different versions of the Emby add-on both development and stable, with the same problem.

I've given up on trying the widgets, log attached, hopefully this will help.

Thanks for the log - yours is a bit different, it returns "attempt to use invalid handle" rather than just crashing like the OP. In your case, the add-on fails to load, not exactly sure why... The OP - the add-on returns the path to play to Kodi, Kodi starts loading the video and checking media info and then it verifies the internal playstate status and Kodi crashes. Widgets have always been a pain to work with, just because of the way Kodi finds the content in database outside of library section (it causes weirdness with resume points/osd artwork, etc).

Honestly, I really don't have time to work on this, but I'll try to work on a test build sometime in the next two days. Thanks for your patience.
