Server fails to restart after upgrade

Hi folks,

I'll attach here a batch of recent log files, zipped up in addition to the log snippets I've pasted in. These are from my HTPC that runs the Emby server plus Emby for WMC.

On several occasions over the past few months I've seen the following series of events:

1. My HTPC restarts for some reason (Windows updates, whatever, nothing pathological).

2. Upon restarting, Emby auto-starts as it should (it is set to run when the windows starts)

3. Emby detects an update to the server is available, and apparently downloads and installs it. I'm usually not paying attention at this point.

4. Sometime later, I fire up Emby for WMC and instead of connecting to the server it gives me the code to connect... and then I notice the server isn't running.

5. I'll manually run the server via the start menu shortcut, and all is fine.

Yesterday this happened and I've captured the logs. It started off a bit odd because we lost power due to weather (a rare situation here). But other than forcing a reboot, which is the first step in the chain of events leading to the problem, the weather related shutdown wasn't a "problem."

To help deconvolute the logs, here is the chain of events.

1. At about 3 pm yesterday, while I was watching a movie, the power went out. The HTPC was on a battery backup, so it stayed on. The TV went off instantly of course, and I lost network in the house quickly because my UPS upstairs that powers my network apparently has dead lead batteries. Gotta order new ones.

2. I pressed stop on the keyboard within a minute or two I think. Presumably this stopped playback; not sure since I had no monitor :-)  The log shows lots of error reports trying to talk to devices, as these devices were now off...

3. About an hour later (a bit after 4pm), the HTPC shut itself down safely based on declining power in the UPS.

4. Power was restored at about ~6:15pm. I rebooted the computer; Emby server started normally. See server-63595217865.txt

5. Apparently Emby found an update. A new log was created as follows see server-63595218200.txt:

6. Emby server DID NOT restart after update. Around 10:15 pm, I went down to play a movie with my wife and server was not running; I had to manually restart it. See log server-63595232239.txt.  Here's the first bits:

(there's lots more in the file).

Please let me know what I can do to ensure Emby Server always restarts after an update.  Note, I'll restate that most of the times I've noticed a failure to restart after update, I've noticed there was a computer reboot shortly before the update.

Thank you!

Well done. Thank you for testing the beta version. Do you have any anti-virus software that might have interfered with the update? If yes, then on the next update, try to be present so that you can monitor it manually and see what happens. thanks.

Ummm... Beta? <checks server settings, finds it's set to beta updates, face turns red in embarrassment>

At some point I was pretty sure I had set it to official releases only, but I find the weight of evidence is against me.

Anti-virus: all that is running is MS System Essentials.  Would it make sense to exclude something from MSSE, or does MSSE have a log I could check to see if it intervened ?  I've rarely had MSSE encounter something it didn't like, but in those few cases it usually was quite insistent that there was a problem. No such notification so far, in this case.

Thanks for your help Luke! For now I'm leaving it at Beta, but I've unchecked automatic application of the updates. So, hopefully I can be around next time the server updates.

OK, some further information, showing continued problems restarting after update.

I noticed that this afternoon there was another update available (I'm set to beta, currently not automatic apply).

So, to reproduced the problems I've seen, I restarted my computer. After it was done and everything had loaded, I went to the Emby server dashboard and told it to update (from 3.0.5924 that it currently was).  It made a new log file for the update:

Then nothing happened. Or at least, nothing visible happened. Couple minutes later, server still not running.

I clicked on the "restart server" button on the dashboard (Which was still up). Not much happened.

I went to the shortcut to the server application, clicked it. Server loaded, saying it had applied the 5925 update and needed to be restart. I clicked the restart server button. Not a lot seemed to happen. Server wasn't running.  Here's the log from the second time it tried:

2016-04-03 17:18:00.4374 Info Main: Exiting to perform application update.

At no time did MS Security Essentials report any problems.

Clicked the server application shortcut; server loaded. Seems to be updated to the latest now, showing 5925. Attaching log post-update.

I will say that my earlier thought that restarting the computer has something to do with the trouble restarting server after update now seems to be disproven... Doesn't seem to correlate.

Yes this beta cycle the process isn't shutting down right or something.  I had to restart the machine once cause something was tying up the system folder, the process wasn't running and no rogue ffmpegs and never did figure it out.  Been doing using the beta setup.exe for updates or manually unzipping update.

The fun continues.

Although I thought I had told Emby not to automatically apply updates, it did again when .5926 became available.  I noticed the problem when I was doing stuff at my upstairs computer and wanted to reference something in my Emby library. I pulled up the dashboard page, but it timed out.

Went down to the HTPC (really gotta set up remote desktop on that thing!). Sure enough it had attempted to apply the 5926 update, but not restarted the server. Here's the log of it doing so:

For now I have switched the updates to Official Releases (so my wife doesn't get annoyed). But if you'd like me to try something I will be happy to play around.

Question: What's the difference between the two checkboxes in the Automatic Updates settings? There is one at the top "Enable Automatic Server Updates" and a second one just below, with a larger, green button saying "Enable the server to restart automatically to apply updates."  At the moment, both are checked. Though I have played around unchecking one or the other. This is a bit odd, as I was quite sure I had the top button (smaller black and white one) unchecked yesterday.

Thanks for all your help!

Marc

i have the same issue, been like this for the last few weeks. every morning around 3am it says there is an update available (beta) downloads it. i'm guessing it initiates a restart however doesn't start back up. highly annoying. I've now changed the settings to not restart after installing an update so will see what happens tonight.

I am having this same issue on the standard release version. Came back from a work trip and when I try to go to the webui all I see is the "Emby Server is loading. Please try again shortly" message. Did you have to reinstall to get it back working again or? I have tried restarting my machine as well as Emby multiple times with zero success.

Additional note is I have zero anti virus software running on my server at all so that would not be the cause of this issue on my end.

Uninstalled Emby and Reinstalled it and it is now working as expected. I had tried running it from the start menu but was getting the same issue. Once I got to the webui console I see that the MBServer installation failed saying that the operation had timed out. Not sure if that is what others are seeing.

i think it's possible there might be some issues with the older installs that are still under mediabrowser-server instead of emby-server

So, what I should attempt is:

1. From programs control panel, uninstall Emby Server

2. Reinstall from the web

3. Completely re-set-up? Or, is there a backup option somewhere (where?)

Thanks

If you uninstall it and do not uninstall all the configurations(option during the uninstall) you shouldn't need to re-setup anything on the reinstall.

I recently notice that for some reasons I don't understand, Emby service won't release folders and file access immediatly after stopping the service. For instance if I don't wait 1 minute after stopping the service, Emby server installer throws a Filesystem error saying it can't move folder system to systemold...

Same thing happening after installation : I use the service to operate Emby server. As usual after upgrade it starts the desktop app. So I close it ASAP... If I don't wait 1 or 2 minutes before launching Emby service it doesn't start at all...

Hope my experience will help...

Just as an update, yesterday I uninstalled Server via the Programs control panel. Did not choose to clear all. The uninstall encountered numerous path problems, resulting in errors. I gave it two attempts. Same results each time. I doubt I got it properly uninstalled, but then I went ahead and installed via the web the current official release. I've got that running, set to update automatically for official releases only. We'll see how it does now.

If that doesn't work I will do a complete uninstall, reinstall. Ugh.

Hi everyone,

I'm still having the "server doesn't restart" issue.

Here's what I did since my last post:

As I mentioned above, I've uninstalled (Sort of... with errors) then reinstalled server. I left it at update for official releases only for now.

About a week ago, on the ~15th or 16th of April, Server was down again. I was with my wife, and it was time to watch a movie, so I didn't do any diagnostics. Just fired up the server (via Start menu) and watched the movie.  A few days later I got around to looking for the most recent log before the shutdown and couldn't find it. Only logs since after restarting server were there.  That seemed odd. But life is busy so I moved on. I checked the dashboard / settings, saw that the .31 update was ready to install (coming from .13).

I let it restart... and as I recall I had to start it manually from the start menu. Sigh. I am not at the computer right now but as I recall I had trouble finding the server log of the shutdown / restart. IT may be that when I uninstalled / reinstalled things are now in different folders (... media browser ... versus ...emby...) even though the old folders still exist.

I'm wondering if a complete uninstall of Server ...total nukage... followed by a reinstallation makes sense. I'm willing to do it. The problem is, the uninstaller barfs as it goes through, and I don't feel up for lots of digging around for stray bits.  Is there a guide to follow somewhere?  My plugins are CoverArt (on Server) and ROC (on emby for WMC).

This is a fluid period... I'm now trying out Theater on a Win 10 tablet (the cheap $100 Flexx 10 from Walmart) and it may also be time to reorganize my library a bit to get away from legacy browsing order.

Open to thoughts here!

Thanks guys!

I had this problem again this weekend. Was playing movies Saturday afternoon, no problem. Saturday night, went down to watch something with my wife and server had shut down/not restarted. Manually started server and everything was OK again but this is pretty annoying. Happens less frequently since I'm sticking to the stable builds.

Any hope this will be fixed?

we are still trying to chase down why this is happening. best thing to do is stay on the stable channel and then you won't have to restart for a few more weeks until there's another update.

And what version are you updating from?

Important Information for Windows Users

If you're currently running Emby Server 3.2.36, you'll need to install this update manually. To do this, simply shutdown Emby Server and run the installer from the website on top of your existing installation. If you're not sure what version you're currently running, then we also suggest updating this way.

Okay.  I'm on 3.2.36.  So I'll update manually.

What are these two things?

  • Add m3u tuner setting to define custom user agent
  • Support custom user agent for xmltv

Are these steps to make the DVR more "multi-user"?

They are something you can set if needed to satisfy requirements of your provider. Otherwise it's not something you'd use.
