Content sorting for Anime seasons and OVA

i have been attempting to get my EMBY server to find the correct information for anime titles but seem to be having problems.

At first i was able to manually select the information but it would not add it in to the files after that i realised that i was adding what was actually the second season but would normally be listed as a different name, this made emby recognise the files and download a picture but then called the correctly names folder season 1 and used the first season picture (The same one as the root folder art) i do not know if i have entere the information wrong or if it is something else but my files are listed as such.

EMBY

  >Anime

    >Freezing (this one has a correct picture)

      >Freezing Vibration ( have also tried (season 2) (Season 2 [Freezing Vibration]) both with no effect.

      >OVA (Uses the same picture) (is listed inside the season 2 folder it will add them to the season list.)

What i would like to know is if there is a way for emby to pick up the information and input it and if there is a way for it to recognise OVA normally and not think they are normal season episodes

Most of the anime that i have added so far worked normally and found all of the info

Unless you are using the anime plugin you need to organize your media to match TVDB.  So Freezing Vibration would be setup like this:

\TV\Freezing (2011)\Season 02\Freezing (2011) s02e01 Pandora Returns.mkv

\TV\Freezing (2011)\Season 02\Freezing (2011) s02e02 Evolution Pandora.mkv

Some anime fans don't like this arrangement.  They can check out the anime plugin.  I prefer the TVDB way so can't help with the plugin.

Even with the Anime plugin you're still better off arranging shows by series/season like with everything else. At this point in time, the Anime plugin is really nothing more than a metadata provider thanks to a number of changes made to how Emby works over the last 15 months or so.

That is how i have mine set up i believe except i don't have (2011) in the file name but i have had to use it like that for shows like Dr Who and The Flash and doing it that way i was able to have it pull photos and some info about the show.

Is it possible to have emby display season 2 as Freezing vibration and not Season 2?

and thirdly how do you normally sort the OVA episodes?

Thanks for the answers by the way

Once the items are named and organized to match TMDB you can rename the individual episodes if you like.  Generally it treats OVA as specials within the series.  As a special episode you can use the metadata editor to force that to show up between other episodes so things can be watched chronologically if you prefer.

I've been battling how to work with my anime collection, and the gist is that there is no GOOD way, and it's likely that there won't ever be since us anime fans are a small subset of their users, and what we need is different than the vast majority of users.

I currently use Media Center Master to manage my anime collection.  It took a couple months to get it working right, but the dev was very responsive to issues and worked with us to get it right.

I also use Filebot sometimes to help standardize naming schemes.

Here's what I found works best:

Use the normal TV series organization. That is, don't have the original series/season's episodes under the series folder, but rather inside a "Season 1" folder within the series folder. OVAs should go in a "Specials" folder with a season number of 0 in the metadata editor, but there's nothing stopping you from having multiple folders for each particular set of OVA episodes if you want (so long as you maintain season number 0 for them). Seasons _can_ be named in the metadata editor and will show up in most places with that name.

Yes, it's not the best, but so long as you follow that structure as seen in the wiki docs and have the Anime plugin to supply additional metadata for episodes and seasons, Emby won't cause too much grief.

Thanks Luke, I appreciate the effort for the anime folks.

Any thoughts on how to address the biggest issue with anime... Season vs Absolute sorting?  Almost all anime (not imported/dubbed) comes with absolute numbering.  Once imported/dubbed they are typically released in the Season format.  While I don't mind the season format, it's a serious PITA to separate and renumber thousands of episodes.  I have at least 1200 from One Piece, Naruto and Naruto Shippuden alone...

I use an app called Sonarr to rename and sort my anime. It only works for tv series but it does a great job.

Once renamed and sorted Emby goes ahead and grabs all of the meta data and images.

Its about the best combo I have found and has worked flawlessly so far.

@@Dizzy49, for one piece for me it put them all in nice season folders and renamed all the files for me as well.

My solution so far has been to make a portable Kodi install to generate an .nfo with anidb information.

Far from ideal, but it works.
