albumartist artwork not downloaded automatically

When viewing my music in the Albums view it appears that I have a bunch of albums for which the artist is not displayed.  The album artist is also not considered when the albums are sorted.  My albums view is front-loaded with all the albums that don't display the artist (I suppose the sort puts them up front).  Then all of my albums that DO show the artist come after that.  You can see a picture below where the two sections meet.  The three albums on the left don't show the album artist underneath the album cover.  The are sorted purely by the album name.  The two 311 albums have the artist name shown below the cover image and are first-order sorted by artist name and second-order sorted by album name.

Here are a couple of notes and observations:

- I know that all of my music is tagged with the artist

- Some of the albums that are missing artist info are mp3, others are m4a.  I don't think it is a file format issue

- Emby clearly knows which artist SHOULD go in the space below the album images because I can pull up the context menu, select "view artist" and I am directed to the appropriate artist page.

Any tips on how I might debug this issue?

Nevermind.  I just went digging through the library.db file too see if I could find any discrepancies between the albums that show the artist and those that do not.  I found it.

The albums that do not show the album artist are tagged with an "Artist", but they are not tagged with an "Album Artist".

I will update my Id3 tags and hope everything gets resolved.

For the record, I add an "Album Artist" tag to the albums that were missing it.

Then rescanned my library and now the "Albums" tab presents my media correctly.

Fixed.

Hey you guys,

though emby is doing very well regarding movies and series, I encounter massive problems when it comes to music (mp3 files).
As well as the op I'm messing around with missing artist for albums in the album view.
I hoped that the proposed solution from this thread could serve me too. But I was wrong. I checked one of the affected albums but the album artist tag is set, as well is the artist tag.

When i try to access the artist page from one of the affected albums the correct page opens up.
All files are tagged with Picard. File system structure (if required) is as follows:

[1. Letter]\AlbumArtistSort\(Year) - Album [ReleaseType] {# of Disc}\{Disc n}\Track# - ArtistSort - Title.mp3

e.g. \\Server\Music\A\A Plus D\(2011) - Best Of Bootie 2011 [ALBUM; COMPILATION]  (2 Discs)\Disc 1\10 - Voicedude  - Moves Like A Deadmau5 (Maroon 5 Vs. Deadmau5 Vs. Rolling Stones).mp3

Is there anything I'm missing? I'd love to see emby displaying my music correct as it does with movies and series!

[uPDATE]

When browsing through the Picard forum i came across this thread: http://forums.musicbrainz.org/viewtopic.php?id=1446

there is no "official" Album Artist Frame in the ID3v2 spec

but instead almost every application would implement its own frame.
So could please someone enlighten me which frame to use in order to achieve
1) the best results in emby
2) keeping compatibility with KODI and iTunes

Hi Luke,

what information is missing?
When I go into album view I have > 1500 (probably much more...) albums beeing displayed without (album) artist information.
Instead they are solely ordered by album title.
But I do as well have albums where the album artist is displayed as expected.
So I thought that this problem might be related to the solution proposed in this thread.
But when i open up a random album (where the album artist is not shown) in MB Picard, the album artist tag is displayed as populated.
So I guess the problem must be something different?
But then i came across the post quoted above, so I'd rather have a look with MP3Tag to check which frame is used for the album artist information...

[uPDATE]

I just rechecked with MP3Tag and the album artist tag is set correctly as well...

we'd have to look at an example then, including what the folder structure is, as well as what the output of ffprobe is using the command line

 -i {1} -threads 0 -v info -print_format json -show_streams -show_format

As I'm at work I'v only have access to a local copy...

ffprobe: http://www.filedropper.com/ffprobe
file: http://www.filedropper.com/01-2raumwohnung-bessergehtsnicht

folder structure is:

local: D:\Daten\Media\Kodi\2\2Raumwohnung\(2007) - 36grad [ALBUM]
server: \\server\musik\mb\2\2Raumwohnung\(2007) - 36grad [ALBUM]

P.S. Server has 3.0.5768.7

In order to resolve this issue, I've deleted my entire music library from emby, cleaned the database and started to re-add the first folder.

The issue is still the same. 25 out of 29 albums are scanned into the database without their albumartist information.
So I added the 2nd folder and ended up with 33 out of 48 albums with missing albumartist information.
I digged a little deeper and run the ffprobe command against one of the 'corrupted' files and guess what...
Exactly, the album_artist tag is filled correctly. (As expected)
As well are the MusicBrainz {*} ID Tags.
I had another look in the emby metadata manager to see that the MusicBrainz Artist ID information is missing.
But that wasn't the only thing that surprised me:
The ffprobe output gave me the following MusicBrainz Album ID value: 218ea81a-9c35-4d6d-bcf0-972b1ac9bdac
whereas the metadata manager came up with the following ID: a4fd6fbd-929b-4b28-819f-fc465fea6605

The Release Group ID however is the same in both places.

So, what is going on here? I assume that this isn't the expected behaviour.

Any news on this?

I also have problems with albumartist.

Tagging is correctly, but automatically mapping art to album is not done.

If I open albumartis + refresh -> art is downloaded (see "4 Non Blondes", "16 Horsepower", "ABC") and displayed

Hello,

I have problems with automagically downloading artwork for albumartists.

Tagging is done correctly, but automatically mapping art to albumartist is not done.

If I open albumartist -> refresh -> art is downloaded (see "4 Non Blondes", "16 Horsepower", "ABC") and correctly displayed:

56ab41ea0d493_29012016112825.png

Maybe, I have to mention that my library is organized as follows:

\Music

\AlbumArtistName - AlbumName

\01 Song.mp3
\02 Song.mp3

so I don't have a separate folder for the albumartist. Maybe this has something to do with it?

Is there a way to "auto-update" albumartists on my collection because I don't like to refresh 936 items manually :-)

kind regards,

B

There have been some issues corrected which is why refreshing manually is fixing it for you. It's not going to go back though and rescan ones that were previously affected by whatever defect is present. you can try a refresh from a top level folder and see if that pulls in some images.

Hello @@Luke.

Are these issues fully resolved?

Today I added deliberatly some new music from an unknown musicartist (or at least unknown to me  :) )

"Trading Change" from "Jeremy Loops":

- all individual *.mp3 have albumart embedded

- all individual *.mp3 are showed with albumart

but

- album cover is not detected (or at least not showed)

56acc637c81b8_30012016151743.png

56acc66668ade_30012016151905.png

tagging was done with mp3tag:

56acc7293e3db_30012016152117.png

FYI:

- the albumartist image was automatically found for Jeremy Loops (wich was not yet in my collection)

- the albumartist image for "Arno" was not found, because this artist was already in my collection

hi @@Luke.

I did a refresh of my whole music library:

Metadata manager -> music -> refresh (at root level)

However, no new albumartist info added to existing artists :-(

Is there anything else I can do to force this?

Will there at some point a fix for this?

Just asking, if there will come no fix, I will try to delete my library and add it again (but then missing my "date added" metadata :-( )

any suggestions?

thanx in advance!

just to let you know:

- removed library

- created new music library, pointing to new directory

- directory containing 2 new albums

- metadata tagged with mp3tag

after scanning by Emby:

- no album art detected

- no album artist info found

- inconsistent behaviour for album artist: only for one of the CD's, the albumartist was resolved

So there is defenitly something wrong here... :-(

any help is appreciated, because music is more important for me than video.

I know what's happening here, it's just an issue of the UI not inheriting the image from song to album.

OK, knowing where the problem is, is the beginning of the solution...  ;)

Main question remains: will there shortly be a solution? And if so: when?

In my test evironment  3.0.5818.0 I

- don't have album images anymore

- don't have albumartist images

not very attractive anymore.

PS:

on my test sytem I organized music in the suggested way:

Library\AlbumArtist\Album\song

I can also see that Emby generated artist.nfo and fanart.jpg and folder.jpg

56af2a04f4058_1022016104741.png

but as you said: nothing in the UI

@Luke: still no news on this? I am willing to reinstall my server and metadata, if the problem is solved.

But right now: no idea. Running the latest version, and still have problems.

Can you point me to a solution to get my artist info back in one or another way?

thanx!

Hello @@Luke,

The issue now is that Emby is not getting artist info anymore.

As mentioned, my music is organised in

\\MEDIASERVER\Music\AlbumArtist - Album\xx trackname.mp3

If I remove ALL music from a certain artist (including compilations that contain tracks of the artist) and

- update metadata

- rescan library

Than, I add this music againg to my library and update+rescan

-> albumartist-info is NOT found.

It seems to me that the artist is not removed from the database, even if there is no music anymore linked to it.

After adding the music again, it does not refresh the artistinfo (because there is a pointer in the database?)

For newly added artist -> no problem.

I did a test in my test-environment.

After removing Neil Young, metadata full refresh+ library scan, I got:

56c88591de31d_20022016162530.png

As you can see: the artis is still found, no albums linked to him.

After adding Neil Young again (and metadata full refresh + library update):

56c886c96edcd_20022016163125.png

As you can see: the album is detected, but the artist (well known) is not updated with info.

Maybe this has something to do with my directory structure.

So I did the same as above, but with \\MEDIASERVER\Music\AlbumArtist\Album\xx trackname.mp3

(note that the album is now a subdirectory of the AlbumArtist)

and BINGO:

56c8892eacd53_20022016164135.png

So my conclusion:

- for existing artists, if you want to update artist-information, the folder structure has to be like \Music\AlbumArtist\Album\xx trackname.mp3 . So it is not "recommended" as mentioned in https://github.com/MediaBrowser/Wiki/wiki/Music%20naming, but obligated...

- for new artists this is not mandatory, artist-info is found although you have to update manually after a scan. I did this test by bying some music with from an unknown artist (I like jazz, so there was some choice  :) ). First scan: albumartist was detected, but no artisinfo. Then manual refresh of artist and :
56c88ddec2579_20022016170121.png

So my question is: is there a way to get all the albumartis info automatically for my library?

I'm NOT willing the change my directory structure: \Music\AlbumArtist - Album\xx trackname.mp3, but if needed I will destroy my music library and do a full rescan. Is this a possible scenario? Only updating the music section of the database?

Thanx in advance,

B

Hi @@Luke,

In addition to above, for analyzing, I installed a new instance of Emby and added my testmusic directory to it.

After full scan (with this new evironment), this was the result:

56c991c68b701_21022016112126.png

As you can see: a total at random result of artist images...  :(

What I forgot to mention, is that metadata is stored locally in the album folder in *.nfo files. So even with my new server, maybe it pickes up the local *.nfo files. But even then: Below you will find the *.nfo of Abba and Adele. Both containing links to musicbrainz. But for abba, I

What I'm going to do now

- copy the library to new folder

- remove all *.nfo, *.jpg etc....

- new instance of emby + full scan

and see what happens.

Keep you informed,

Bart
