Anyone, using a Roku 4 with HEVC (h.265) content?

Looking into saving space and was considering converting my lossless h.264 MKV files into HEVC (h.265) files. However, this means they would be transcoded on my Roku 3 devices. Upgrading one of the devices to a Roku 4 can help with potential transcoding issues. It supports HEVC but I was curious if anyone actually experienced the playback yet.

I am guessing that if it works right, I shouldn't see any change with my DVD and Bluray quality content.

The official app doesn't fully support the roku4...yet..but, the blue neon app does support roku4 and will successfully direct stream vp9 and hevc without transcoding. If you read through the blue neon thread you will see where others confirm this. I know you said you frown on using unofficial apps because of their tentative and transient nature, but atm this is really the only way. The app is at a point where it is very matured and deployed on several hundred devices. This is pretty good considering it is a private app with a forum thread, and no official store presence. If there were major issues with roku4 we would see it here. So far, all appears nice and quiet. This is a good thing. :)

I will submit some pull requests to get hevc/vp9 support for roku4 into the official app. Hopefully soon we can coordinate and work on os7 and scene graph eye candy. The roku is treated like the red headed step child lately. The roku is deserving of love too. I love my roku.

I mean, the official roku app, the present capabilities.brs. if indeed someone put that hevc/vp9 will direct play for users of the app using roku4's then they lied. I think they updated that document without realize that the present capabilities.brs in the roku app will not do this. It is an oversight possibly. This is bad form as it presently is lying to people and they wont understand its an innocent lie. A simple oversight issue.

I know the roku well, what it can and cannot do. I cannot test roku4 since I just have my roku3. But the point is the only real tests with roku4 has been with blue neon app and the users willing to test there. So please give them thanks for getting it this far when you read that thread and like their posts.
