HDHR3-CC SD Only for Most Channels? Cablebox shows them in HD

I recently purchased a Silicondust HD Homerun Prime (HDHR3-CC), and have it hooked up with a Cablecard from Charter.  The issue that I'm running into is that most of my channels are only showing up in SD on Emby Live TV.  There are several HBO HD channels that will show up in HD but all of the other channels are SD.  Viewing the same channels on the Charter cablebox shows these channels in HD.

Has anyone else had this problem?

Do you have any suggestion as to why I'm only seeing SD, or things to troubleshoot?

My hope was to rid myself of my cablebox and have the wife/kids use Emby exclusively for Live TV and all of our other media but SD only is a dealbreaker for me.  Any suggestions for troubleshooting or help would really be appreciated (I'm 10 hours into troubleshooting, searching on the internet, and calling Charter with no fixes).

Tuner: Silicondust HDHR3-CC

Tuner Adapter (from Charter): Arris MTR700

OS: Windows 7

8 gig ram

AMD Phenom x6-1045T - 2.7ghz processor

Thanks!

Hi, welcome. Are you doing this with the native live tv support in Emby or have you installed a live tv plugin?

If native, then open {0}/lineup.json in a browser, where {0} is your tuner ip address. that is the channel list that emby gets from your tuner, so if certain channels are missing from that list, then you'll want to look at the HDHR web configuration to try to find out why.

Thanks for the welcome.

I'm using Emby Theater to display live TV but have set up everything prior to using Emby theater in 'config emby' from the emby tray icon.  (Please pardon my technical ignorance :-))

I loaded the lineup using 192.168.1.94/lineup.json and I do see missing channels. For example, channel 4 is HD on my cablebox and is not listed in this lineup.  Is there some way that I can get this channel (and the other HD channels) to show up on this list?

If there's any other information that I can provide to help troubleshoot I'm happy to do so.  Thanks!

Here's a copy/paste of part of the lineup:

I had previously installed ServerWMC and I just uninstalled it after connecting the Cablecard but before trying to load Live TV in Emby Theater

If this helps, I looked up the channel lineup on the HDHR and it does show the channels that are missing on the lineup.json file.  http://192.168.1.94/lineup.html

I tried to paste a screen grab569aa032024e0_hdhrlineup.jpg

try to refresh the guide in the live tv configuration area. also, ensure serverwmc is no longer installed because if it is then it's the plugin's responsibility to provide the channel list, so you'd have to get help from that developer. If none of that helps, then please provide the server log from that time period:

OK, refreshed the guide in live tv config (screen grab shows it in progress but I waited until it was finished to check the .json file).  i checked the .json file and i still don't see, for example, channel 4.  I also made sure that serverwmc was uninstalled.  Do I need to check any config files to make sure that serverwmc uninstalled properly?

Not sure if this helps but I configured the tuner in Windows Media Center to see if I could tune to channel 4.  I downloaded the guide data and was able to tune to channel 4 but it is in SD (If I tune to channel 4 on my cablebox it is in HD).

I think the guide is probably fine but it might be playback-related. Maybe it is the HD channel but being re-encoded.

in simple terms, forget HD, does the channel list in Emby match what you see in the lineup.json? If yes, then Emby is displaying everything it has access to. it might just be playback related, so you should probably see how to report media playback issues:

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.  I'll start doing research related to playback issues and report back.  Thanks for your quick help, it is appreciated.

Great. if there are channels missing from lineup.json then you will probably have to rescan or redetect channels in the HDHR interface. they need to appear in that lineup, json before emby will be able to see them.

Once the correct channels are listed, then try to play something and circle back to post #12 above. Thanks.

I've confirmed that the channels aren't missing.

I loaded up Emby LIve TV from the server and played Channel 4.  I was able to click on settings and see that 1080p-50Mbps is checked.  The signal is definitely SD though with black bars on the top and bottom of the TV screen.

When I display the same channel from the Charter Cablebox (same TV) it is definitely HD with no black bars on top or bottom of the TV screen.

I'm trying to understand what signal Emby Live TV is actually receiving.  If the picture shows bars on the top & bottom of the TV and looks SD, but the settings icon shows 1080p-50Mbps, how can I tell what quality signal am I actually receiving through Emby Live TV?

Unfortunately I didn't find any posts in the Live TV forum that relate to SD playback.

Keep in mind that they are probably delivering both an SD version and an HD version of the channel (though the channel numbers will be different).  The cable box is probably doing some magic in the background so that when you tune to channel "4", it actually shows you the HD version which is a higher channel number.

On my Charter system, the low channel numbers are SD, with their HD equivalents in the 700 range.

If you look at the HDHR's channel lineup (from the HDHR's web page instead of Emby) do you see another "WDIV" lower down in the list?  And have you run another "Detect Channels" if not?  Might take a little time for the cablecard to be fully updated.  When I first got two HDHRs, I did have one of the them where the cablecard was not activated correctly by the cable folks (yes, I know, shocker right?) so it didn't have all the channels I was supposed to have, so that's possible also.

If you're not seeing the channels you expect, you might want to talk to the cable folks and ask them what all channel numbers you should be seeing.

Thanks for the info.  I do see another WDIV further down the list in the 700s (780 to be exact).  Once the wife is off of the TV I'll try to tune to that channel see if it is HD.  I didn't even think to check further down the list because I just assumed that Channel 4 would be the same across multiple devices.  I'll report back after checking in case this solves the problem and may help someone else.

puithove you were right.  I had to go to the 700s to get the HD channels.  Since the HD channels are different on my cablebox I didn't make the connection.  Thanks to you and luke for helping me troubleshoot, much appreciated!  Time to watch some HD Football.
