New Emby Setup - Can't connect to server remotely

Hello all.  I'm setting up Emby for the first time and have everything working on my HTPC (host) machine.  I can successfully access Emby through WMC and through the web app.

However, I can't access the server on other devices.  I've downloaded the Emby app for Android and iOS, as well as tried accessing the server from a laptop, but I keep receiving the following error message:

"Connection Failure.  We're unable to connect to the selected server right now.  Please ensure it is running and try again"

I'm able to login in and see the server name, but when I click/select the server and try to connect, the above message appears.  I have tried manually connecting and also tried entering a new server using the http/https addresses.  Nothing seems to work though...

Did you go through the "Test Your External Address" section?

Yes, I turned off my phone's wifi and entered the remote IP address, but get the "webpage not available" message

OK, I've added a new section at the bottom called Setup Port Forwarding

https://github.com/MediaBrowser/Wiki/wiki/Connectivity

You'll need to configure your internet router to allow the external traffic to reach your emby server machine.

Hello Luke.  I configured port forwarding on my Asus router per the instructions in that link.  However, I'm still having the same problem.  Connection failure window pops up when I select my server on any device other than the hose device.  Here's how the port forward was setup.  Is this correct?  I appreciate all the help.

Yes, I looked through that page, confirmed port 8096 is open, but still does not connect.

You confirmed this with something like CanYouSeeMe.org from outside your network?

Ok, so I turned off windows firewall to test if that was causing the problem, and that worked.  I can now access Emby on my mobile devices.  So how can I troubleshoot the firewall in order to keep it on, but still allow Emby to work?

Hello ebr.  See new post above.  Any thoughts?

That's covered in our Connectivity wiki:

I previously had done that step.  I have an inbound rule set to open port 8098, but with firewall turned on, I still get the connection failed message.  Do I need to create an outbound rule that does the same thing?

Ok, think I have this figured out.  I looked through the long list of inbound rules and for some reason there was a rule blocking mediabrowser server application.  I didn't put that rule there, so somehow it was added during the setup process.  I turned the rule to "allow connection" and now everything works as intended.

Thanks for all the help everyone.  I'm now streaming 4-5 simultaneous movies and the family is very excited, especially the wife :o)

Glad you got it working.

More than likely what happened was, when you first installed/ran the server it threw up one of those nasty looking Windows dialogs that says this program is requesting some sort of access to the network and you either denied it or didn't realize it was there at all.

This just fixed my install as well! Thanks!! - I had Emby working fine, then I probably did something (not sure what) but had been hunting for the fix for a while. I added rules to permit Emby, but never looked for something else blocking it. Deleted the four mediabrowser rules and voila, I'm back! Cheers!

EDIT:

My "fix" wasn't the issue. Looks there is something odd going on with the https connection. Can connect via 8096 but not 8920. Back to the drawing board.

I'm using the latest Emby version, and still have the same issue.

Ports 8920, 8096 are openning on my router.

I think the HTTPS on Emby Connect has a bug.

By the way, I hope somebody create a Sharp Aquos TV profile b/c my videos and audio length are display 0:00 .

Thanks.

Hi, can you describe your connection issue in more detail please? Please describe with information such that I could attempt to see the exact scenario with my own testing. thanks.

Hello Luke,

I tried it on my iPhone 5S with different two different account via https://app.emby.media .

I also added my URL manually, but no luck.

It's unable to find my server.

Not sure if this is matter, but I'm running on OpenMediaVault, Debian Wheezy.

PHP 5.4; Nginx.

I just came back to Emby and tried again after a year.

But I remember that this issue happened last year too.
