Is there a way to display track name if available?

Fayth

Recommended Posts

I like to rip the commentary on my Blu-rays, and rename the subtitle and audio track to indicate that they are commentary. It seems Emby web client (and I assume mobile apps but I haven't checked) just shows the language and some technical details, but does not show the name. Is there a way to enable this?

If not, I think it would be something to think about adding, as it can be hard to tell which subtitle or audio track you should take for some media. For example, with anime there will be full english subtitles, then the english subtitles that go with the dub, and then the english commentary subtitles. Right now, other than the default or forced flag, those appear identical, despite my files having names that would differentiate them.

Yeah, when I rip my blu-rays using MakeMKV and mkvmerge. I guess I am kind of out of touch with other methods. I've never used open subtitles or anything because all that information is on my discs already.

How does the typical user differentiate between tracks with the same language (audio or subtitles)? If there is a way that is commonly used that I don't know about I am open to trying it.

In containers like Matroska or MPEG4 there is the possibility to use the Title field to put in a Description for Video and Audio. In this Example, Audio:

Audio #1
ID : 2

When checking details of titles with different audio in supporting apps (e.g. Android, WebClient, iOS...) or when changing Audio during playback, it would be really useful to implement the display of the infos in the Title field instead of just showing language + Codec + bitrate + channels.

This time a bad mockup, but this is how I kinda imagine:

So I've looked into this some more, and it is definitely common that content with subtitles that comes from more "mainstream" sources have titles for their tracks. I mean, that is kind of expected, because I still don't see how there is any way to tell tracks of the same language apart without some additional information. Emby shows the default and forced flags, but those aren't sufficient to cover content with commentary tracks, not to mention the fact that they aren't user friendly at all.

This isn't just about subtitles either, a good example would be episode commentary audio tracks, that you find on many Blu Ray releases (Game of Thrones is something popular that comes to mind as an example). Right now, the only thing I can do is set the normal episode audio to default and include the commentary as a second audio track. In all Emby apps, it will just say something like "eng -dca -DTS-HD MA -6ch (D)" for the normal track, and "eng -dca -DTS-HD MA -6ch" for the commentary track in the dialog where I can choose between them. As the person who rips the content, I pretty much always no what is what, because I follow the same process for all my rips, but its unreasonable to expect a user who doesn't manage the content to intuitively understand what the extra audio track might be. Sure, they could switch to it and check, but it just seems like an unnecessary problem.

I still think this is something worth considering.

is it really that common though? what does ffprobe produce as the output for it?

It's the same request as this one from me @@Luke

http://emby.media/community/index.php?/topic/31123-feature-request-support-for-audio-descriptiontitle-in-mediainfo/

And yes, filling the title field is totally mainstream, specially in mkv scene like @@Fayth said. It's used for indication when having multiple streams in same language or the bitrate in lossless compressed formats like DTS-HD or TrueHD which usually cannot be read out by e.g. MediaInfo without reading the whole stream.

A very good use case are the Despecialized Editions of Star Wars by Harmy.

Any news about this? I need to ask here since my initial feature request to this obviously got deleted.

@@Luke you asked for ffprobe. I mean we talk about a an info which is included on Metadata 1st place when using ffprobe (title). It's just not used by Emby.

This is also common with Anime releases that have different types of subtitles (for credits/songs vs. dialog). If I open the file in PotPlayer or VLC I'll be able to see the descriptive name of audio track which helps differentiate.

This will be in the upcoming server release. We're not going to re-probe existing videos though, so it will require manually refreshing titles.

FrostByte

Will track names be displayed for both audio and subtitle tracks?

It does.  It also looks like it populates the title with the language, codec, channels, etc if left blank.  Mine are typically blank unless I have more than one audio or subtitle

Definitely not Frosty ;) I don't know which fields Emby takes as source, but it's not the title field as far as I can see. If so, e.g. in 1st audio stream there should stand "1978 2.0 @ 384 kbps"

See screenshot of reprobed title and compare with http://emby.media/community/index.php?/topic/29047-is-there-a-way-to-display-track-name-if-available/&do=findComment&comment=317285

Hmm...well crap.  The release notes say "Support media track display titles" so I assumed it was supposed to be the title and it was just filling it in with other information since mine were blank.

Since everything in the title field in Emby is part of the Stream #X:X info itself, I could imagine it has been generated from this. Or @@Luke hasn't yet fully finished the implementation.

it does auto-populate if left blank. the apps can use this now to standardize the display text that shows up in the track selection menus

yea you have to refresh existing titles. the server isn't going to re-probe them as that will just cause people to complain about it.

I took longer when I refreshed the title since server was busy because I started a refresh few minutes ago regarding another issue http://emby.media/community/index.php?/topic/34767-305960/page-2&do=findComment&comment=329476

Good day,

That make issue for me when I try to add a subtitle, now, I do not see the track name for language, hope this return back to what it was, or at least an option.
