Why can't I control a Roku on internet?

I'm at my inlaws in the great white north (aka Canada) and I can't seem to control my Roku even though it lists itself in the devices to 'play to'.

 

This works flawless inside the network with the server.

 

My guess is that this because the server needs to be able to talk directly to the device on a private network...or is something just a little wonky on my setup?
