Feature Request - Stretch to fit

Would it be possible to add a feature to stretch 4:3 to fit a 16:9 tv screen?

 

For instance, I have 4 seasons of Night Court on DVD, the DVD Player automatically stretches it to fit the screen, I'd like the Roku Emby browser to be able to do this too.

Because, to be honest, you can barely tell its stretched when playing the DVD, so I doubt it'd be any different on the Roku.

I have several 4:3 shows I'd like to put on my server.

You can use the aspect-ratio button on your tv remote to do this. It should have a mode to stretch. To have this possible on the roku directly, would force transcoding. This is the only way you can manipulate the streams. When you say "stretch" I am assuming you mean and dont keep aspect ratio. No letterbox visible. Go full frame with the video to a forced 1.78:1 aspect ratio? I personally wouldnt want to stretch of ar, but this is indeed possible. I prefer to direct-stream as much as possible. It would require modifying the server to produce these transcoded stretched streams for the roku to consume.

True, and I do.  My problem comes when I try to explain this to some of my family that are less than tech savvy.  I suppose I could just copy my DVDs again and change the aspect when I make them mp4s.  I had planned on this already, but thought I'd toss this out there.

I set up my Emby server for my mom who is getting up there in age, but loves her Roku.

One simple & very quick way to change the aspect would be to drag your 4:3 mp4 into mkvtoolnix GUI, select the video track and then choose 16/9 in the "Set Aspect Ratio" field under Video Properties and finally click "Start Muxing".

 

You'll end up with an mkv file, but it'll play stretched.

Why does the new mkv NEED to transcode to display in 16:9?

 

On the direct stream it still is 4:3.
