Got EMC working in Windows 10 working.

@@BeppoMonkeyBoy dangled the carrot saying he had it working, so thought i would give it a go.  There are hundreds of sources on the internet that give you download links and instructions.  However there is only one that I have found that worked for me.

64bit WMC for Windows 10 - V8

I've not tested live TV yet thru WMC..... nor will i get a chance to in the near future, however everything else, emby wise is working very well.

Enjoy :D

Cheers Cheese - going to go and give this a go now.

I gave up about a month ago trying to get it to work because I couldn't get it to find my Xbox extenders so couldn't stream any media to my playback device of choice.

Any idea if Extender support works now?

Does anyone have WMC working completely on Win10 yet?

I installed as per instructions and all the EMBY functions seemed to work ok.

I couldn't get EPG data until I added

2.16.216.176    cdn.epg.tvdownload.microsoft.com
65.55.186.113    data.tvdownload.microsoft.com
to my hosts file.
Now I can get EPG data and can watch LiveTV.
However, I cannot record TV at all.
Everything looks ok, no errors but nothing gets recorded.

Does WMC Record at all, or is it just the Emby bits?

All the Emby bits seem to work fine. Plays movies, scrapes metadata, etc, etc.

On the WMC side, everything works except recording. I acan see the guide. I can watch TV selected from the guide. I can try to record from the guide - the red dot appears. Every thing looks ok but later, when I look in Recorded TV, there is nothing there.

Installed this on one of our laptops last night as a test to see how it works. Very easy indeed and appears to be fully functional at least as far as Emby for WMC is concerned. Now to decide if I want to take the leap with our main media PC's.

Need to test if it works with my PCI-E capture card for live terrestrial TV in the UK (including recording) or not before I make the final decision I guess.

Lets hope Microsoft don't suddenly decide to issue a patch that disables all this hard work by those guys. Think I'll make sure I have an image of my old Windows 7 machine saved just incase, if I do decide to go down this route.

Did you read the workarounds.txt, included with the wmc download?  The solution suggested to add "Network Service" in Administrators Group, I'm assuming you're using Windows 10 Pro.  I would use V10 if you're located in the US with DRM channels.

_ReadMe.txt

===============================================================================
Info:

Windows Media Center version 6.3.9600.16384 (Windows 8.1)
for Windows 10 (10.10240.16384) and later, or Windows 8.1 with no Media Center

===============================================================================
Preparations:

- After you download the pack, make sure the .7z file is Unblocked
to do so, right click on file, check properties general - click Unblock button if present

- Extract the package to a directory with simple short path without spaces (example: C:\WMC)

- If you previously tried another/older pack, or your system is upgraded from Windows 7/8.1 with Media Center
you may run Uninstaller.cmd to remove the pack/leftovers properly, and reboot the system afterwards

===============================================================================
Instructions:

1)
Run _TestRights.cmd script as administrator
if another command prompt window is opened, then close it and proceed to step 2)
if no cmd window opened, try again one or two more times
if still no cmd windows opened, then you need to reboot the system and test again.

2)
Run the outer Installer.cmd script as administrator to install the pack

workarounds.txt

Common issues workarounds:

===============================================================================
To have WMC to wake up for recordings, you may need to make "NETWORK SERVICE" a member of the administrator group

Run lusrmgr.msc, or right-click on Start button and select: Computer Management > Local users & Groups
then:
Groups > Administrators > Add > "network service" > Check names > OK

or directly open command prompt as administrator:
for /f "usebackq delims=" %x in (`powershell "(New-Object System.Security.Principal.SecurityIdentifier('S-1-5-32-544')).Translate([System.Security.Principal.NTAccount]).Value.Split([IO.Path]::DirectorySeparatorChar)[1]"`) do set "admins=%x"
for /f "usebackq delims=" %x in (`powershell "(New-Object System.Security.Principal.SecurityIdentifier('S-1-5-20')).Translate([System.Security.Principal.NTAccount]).Value"`) do set "netsvc=%x"
net localgroup %admins% "%netsvc%" /add

Windows 10 Home edition don't have Group Policy, thus you need to try the command prompt directly

===============================================================================
Simple guide for live TV setup by "GunnerHook":

1. Do clean install of Win10 build 10240.

2.  Install HDHomerun tuner drivers.

3. Download and install WMC pack.

4. Open command prompt as administrator, and execute:
attrib -r C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc\hosts
notepad C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc\hosts

Add these 2 entries at the bottom if they don't exist:
2.16.216.176    cdn.epg.tvdownload.microsoft.com
65.55.186.113    data.tvdownload.microsoft.com

save the file, and reboot

5. Right click and Launch WMC as admin for the very first setup of WMC
Go through the live setup on WMC, put in correct zipcode, finish all the basic steps of live tv setup in WMC.

6. Install DVD player app (through WU or manually as descibed above)

7. Add NETWORK service to the administrators group in order for scheduled recordings to start correctly.

8. If you are using HDHomerun and you get no tv signal available for this channel, reinstall the HDhomerun drivers again AFTER the TV setup was completed in WMC.

===============================================================================
If the initial tv setup wizard stuck, reboot the system
then launch this file as administrator while WMC is running
C:\Windows\ehome\mcupdate.exe

===============================================================================
If you have "Decoder Error", you may install Shark007 codec pack:
http://shark007.net/

check this file for recommended settings:
http://mediacenterworld.nl/download/Shark007_setting_win10_MCE.pdf

===============================================================================
If the search through guide in WMC fails with an error that indexing was still occuring,
Open an elevated command prompt, and execute:

reg delete "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Media Center\Service\EPG" /v SearchRegistered /f
net stop WSearch
cd %windir%\ehome
ehprivjob /DoRegisterSearch

===============================================================================
If you are having activation issues of the CableCard Product key:

when your activation fails, click back in the wizard
then open command prompt as administrator, and execute:
slmgr -ipk MVV4F-R2T29-WBHYJ-BBFQY-J64XX
slmgr -ato

then continue the wizard

===============================================================================
If you have Guide data download problems (specially US residents):

1.Open notepad (right click> run as administrator)

2.Open host file ( File>open> c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts)

3.Add this to the end of the file-
2.16.216.176 cdn.epg.tvdownload.microsoft.com

and place one of the below ip addresses depending on your location in the US
west coast or east coast
65.55.186.113 data.tvdownload.microsoft.com
central or southern us
65.55.5.170 data.tvdownload.microsoft.com

ex. If you lived on the east coast you would add this to the bottom of the file:
65.55.186.113 data.tvdownload.microsoft.com
2.16.216.176 cdn.epg.tvdownload.microsoft.com

4.Save the file (file>save)

5.Open CMD command prompt (file>search for cmd>right click>run as administrator)

6.Type: ipconfig /flushdns
If you type it correctly it should say: "successfully flushed the dns resolver cache."

7.Close Windows Media Center if it is open

8.Start>type "c:\ProgramData\Microsoft\ehome"

9.Delete file "mcepg2-0" and folder "mcepg2-0" this will force you to set up live tv from scratch in WMC (or delete anything named m***.db and the corresponding folder)

10.Open windows media center and go through the Live TV setup and you should now be able to download guide data

Thanks JayAre. I did read the workaround.txt (Thats where I learned about the two additions to Host file.)

No, I am not using Win10pro. Like probably 90% of the people on Win10, I just did the free upgrade to Win10 Home which does not allow group policy edits. I will give the command prompt workaround a try.

I did use V10.

I am in Canada with only OTA channels.

What are you trying to do exactly, change the order of your menus? in WMC rather than EMC?

there's a pretty good GUI out there that allows you to do this.  I'll see if i can find it for you.
