The new Roku 4 is being released on Oct 21st! Along with 4k support, the new unit is expected to include a new OS with advanced app development support. I would like to raise funds to donate new Roku 4 units to the core Emby developer team to encourage a new round of development for the Roku platform. Let's all band together and show our support for the Roku platform,  and work together to make the Roku app the best of them all!

I have set up a funding campaign online: https://www.gofundme.com/k36fzhwk

Let me know if you have any questions, and thank you to everyone who donates!

----------

Fundraising Details: my goal is to ship 4 units to 4 Emby developers from amazon as soon as possible. The units cost $129.99 each plus sales tax. Free shipping . Gofundme.com also charges 7.9% in fees. That all adds up to $611 total. If less than that is raised, then I will ship as many units as possible and donate the remaining funds to the subscription alias.

That would be fantastic as we're going to get started with scene graph soon. (that is their new SDK with all the new features for developers).

I'm in.  Can we donate to the PayPal account used for the monthly/annual/lifetime support, or do we need to do something else?

you can always do that. another way is to trust a community member to manage it. that way we get to see output of it and whether it produces devices or not. we'll see what ebr thinks.

Yeah, I did some research and saw that gofundme.com is probably the fastest way to set it up, but they dont take paypal (liability).

Maybe we could use the paypal account instead, and track the funds in a forum thread? Just throwing out ideas.

Farside847, I like you. You seem to be the whip, that gets the horse into action. You can set up both, a gofundme and a paypal donate button. This would generate possibility for multiple payfronts. You seem dedicated enough to be trusted.

The issue is more, how do you attract developers to the roku4 without pulling them off other emby projects. Like if ebr helps out on roku, this diminishes android tv/fire tv. Simply because time isnt infinite. So new developers with experience in brightscript need make their appearance known. This would create competition among developers to out design each other with their apps. This was happening at first, but now, it seems a more unified look and feel among clients is desired. I am more, everyone should be free to choose. More options and choices are a good thing to me.

To spur development faster we need firmware 7.x to be in the wild. At the moment it is still obtained solely by roku forum invite and providing your roku serial number. Plus its still a work in progress, beta.

I like the idea farside847. Please do follow through with it.

i think something neat to entice others to donate would be to allow anyone who donates x amount of dollars or more to be included in testing or get an early preview of the updated app.

Its hard to offer that when its a fully open-source project. People who contributed can be given a special link with additional benefits, not privy to github yet. Where the changes are withheld for a bit. But what kind of delay are you talking about before pushing the changes to the public? This might cause sour faces if too long. For example, look at plex forums roku section complaints. There are many because they use this same method. Instead we can offer perhaps personal builds, with custom features not present or ever may be present in the official version. The same way the blue neon theme adds in features, the official never will have. This is entirely possible. It would just be a very sad day to close the source for the official roku client and sharing of zips (which contain the pure source code) for nowtv/roku sideloading. This is counter-intuitive to the sharing of knowledge over github. Again, plex chose this path and its turned out bad for them.

Nice follow through. I knew you were awesome. :)

What type of entitlement do you think works when people contribute to this?

I think just being included in testing would be cool. I'm not suggesting a change in how emby does it's business. Just looking for incentives for ppl to donate

I would like to donate but I can not until this Friday the 23rd. Do you mind keeping it open until then?

Sure, so far we are only at $60 - I will keep it open for a while and see how it goes. I do not have a hard end-date.

Nice idea, I would be willing to look at the new OS for roku4 if your short of finding the required number of developers. If that was to happen I would port across the better features from my media centre app (eg, rotating backgrounds, grid view, bling artwork etc) into the official app. Cheers

Has anyone thought about sharing the URL on the Emby facebook page? I don't know if it would reach more users that way or not but it's an idea.

Great! The whole idea is to encourage development on the router platform and it's new capabilities. New things should be possible like TV guide grids, dvr functions, pretty interface and backgrounds, etc. :)

Well, the roku4 is out and I have only raised $70. I think I will give it till Monday and then close the fundraiser. If I have enough I will ship a unit, it not then I will donate the cash to the team.

Thank you to all those who donated! And if you would like to, nows your last chance!

Thank you for the reminder. I completely forgot. I blame Children.

Yes, I know the feeling. 92% of emby playback is a Disney Channel show. ;)

Thanks for the donation !
