Cannot play media through Kodi since Emby Add-on Update

Yep, that fixed it. Thank you; that was a very annoying little glitch.  :)

I should look into trying the path substitution again, though I'd read that just streaming it gave you more features?

Thank you!

Direct play and direct streaming are pretty similar in result. The main benefit to using direct streaming is to allows you to view your content inside and outside of your network/bypass network path issues. There's no difference in features.

The difference in the add-on settings is if you enable direct paths over plugin paths. Some plugins do need to see inside your actual content directory to function properly. Plugin paths mask that final path. However, the benefit from this approach is the path and playback aspect are controlled by the add-on. We are able to give more features such as emby cinema experience, view your content outside network (we are able to return the direct path, or direct stream, or transcode in real time), control parental access for restricted profiles (kids profile for example).

Hope this clarify a few things. :)

In the previous stable version - playback was silently falling to direct stream if direct play was not going to work. Now it tells you and by enabling Play from http you get the previous behavior.

Ah, if Emby had told me there was a problem I wouldn't have had it not working for a few days. ;)  Far too many errors, like not having write permission on the media drives, gets lost in the detailed Emby logs while the GUI somewhat hides the logs under a Help entry (if you don't think you need Help, you don't click on it) and doesn't offer any indication on the main display that there's even a problem.

Thankfully Emby has a great community and for that, all of us are very grateful.

Oi Vey, if only i had found this thread last night before completely stripping my new htpc back to a bare OS! The emby for kodi add-on quietly updated shortly after the machine was moved to Windows 10, and my emby server runs in a docker container on my NAS, so doesn't automatically get updates. I couldn;t find the thing that had made it all seemingly break ,and it turns out a small but significant change on the add-on was it.

Any reason the behaviour was changed from failing back to HTTP streams to just not playing the media?

Anyway, glad for the help i have found.

Now that direct play works again for me, i'm wondering if i should bother? Having Emby do some handling doesn't seem too cpu heavy on the little NAS, and i guess using http streams allows Emby a bit more power over transcoding. It's also a bit less fiddly config wise.

Well when we fallback automatically we get people asking why their srt files don't work. BUT it should have popped up a dialog asking it you wanted to try http - did it not?

I highly recommend turning off auto update.

To be able to direct play depends solely on Kodi being able to locate the file with the given path. If it fails you will get the message: unable to direct play. Play from http instead.

The only time it will not is if your path are structured like nfs with no file protocol (Kodi is unable to verify these type of paths) so I allow it to go thru. But

the Kodi log will always tell you what's going on, if it fails in any way.

Yeah, I'll be ditching auto update. The system was still being built.

I didn't get a direct stream error, at least not one that made sense to me. I can check again later tonight what the actual message was. Being still new to emby, there's every chance I misunderstood. Definitely didn't give an option for http though. Just an error.

I guess I'll configure direct play, if it impacts subs. Might I suggest perhaps that a failback to http be automatic with a notification at the top of the screen saying as much. That way the media plays, but the user is informed. No doubt though, someone else would want it to fail fully, or disable the notification. Can't win most likely!

Thanks for the responses too. First time posting here, happy to be part of a conversation. Cheers.

If you got an error, please post the log so I can look into it. I will take into consideration your request. Nothing is set in stone at this point, we are still looking to improve. The reason why we went for the dialog is to be able to offer to set play from http permanently. It stops prompting every time playback happens if it's enabled. But I think your option might be nicer because the ultimate goal is to have playback work regardless of your setup, but with notification of what's going on.

Thank you :)

I can't very well moan like that and not follow through with the screenshot/logs. After removing the path substitution i put in place last night to solve the problem, the issue returns as before. That is playback of the media fails with either no message at all, or the below error message with no option to stream via http (as has been suggested it perhaps should by @@xnappo.)

Problem is solved either by

1. enabling http streaming in the add-on (v1.1.39)

2. adding in path substitutions for my TV and Movies folders (emby server 3.0.5675.1 in a docker container).

Hope this can help in future development.
