@BarryAmerika

Only the android tablets will cause you trouble with transcoding. I can see that Emby will be doing passthrough at some point in the future so really you can Build new stuff now or wait till UNC passthrough is supported with android devices.

Unless your Android stuff has no hardware capability

But yea i5 or xeon E3 with 8Gb Ram for NAS that has to do Work will be suitable I think.

You current NAS should just be a NAS with mail etc not Processor intense stuff.

example of hardware.

or

Motherboard

IF you need more then 4 HDD's then just get a 4 drive raid controller later off ebay.

You then have the choice of eithe MCE with windows Storage Spaces as main PC Or XPenology Backend.

Me going off OP topic  :D

or this Mother board for 6xhdd, wifi and 2xlan

http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=138_1019&products_id=32067

for insane transcoding in small form factor there are various products available from Supermicro (large wallet time.)>$800

slightly less insane is ASROCK have some itx server boards.

e.g. insane transcoding http://www.supermicro.com.tw/products/motherboard/Xeon/D/X10SDV-8C-TLN4F.cfm with 10Gbit fiber link to Switch Ohhh yea

Well it all depends on budget and power consumption. multi threaded atoms are great @ about 2 threads per HD stream i believe. Bringing Blade cpu's to consumer market is awesome.

But most people want <$500 NAS

If you have hardware smarts then ebay a i5 or i7 computer with 4gb ram stock multi Hdd case and start with that.

If you have 2k to blow into the wind then many many many more options open up.

Most people use a stock modem/router with no idea how fast the internet can be (browsing etc should be near instant with >2.5Mbps connection.)

People should ask.

I have x wireless clients

I have x budget

I have x parts lying about

What can I do to have all the awesome?

What can I expect from that awesome?

Most people say: I WANT ALL THE COOKIES

response: that will be 2-4K

people: But I has $5 and a cute kitten pic

response: zzzzzzzzzz
